Ngl it seems like the downfall of sonic and sega has a whole can be blamed on sega of Japan. It seems like every bad decision that ruined the company was done by higher ups in japan who don't understand how the rest of the world works

Good about Sega Saturn is: Bumpers on The Controller, Sega Saturn's Analog Stick Controller, AC Adapter, Audio CD, little more powerful than PlayStation, Internet Browser, Theater Of The Eye almost in the end of Sega E3 Event: Launching Sega Saturn, Sega Saturn Outsold Nintendo 64 only in Japan 5 Million Units but again only in Japan and Virtual Fighter Series

Bad about Sega Saturn is: 3D Textures almost the same as Sega 32X?, Sega 32X, Launch of Today Instead of weeks or months, PlayStation, No 64 Bit system on Sega Saturn, Doesn't Handle 3D Textures, many mistakes before the Sega Saturn with Sega Genesis, Lack of actual Sonic the Hedgehog Games like Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic Jam, Heavy as Xbox System and Price of 399$ then decrease to 299$ and so on and it's too late, because PlayStation Price 299$.

Guardian Heroes, Legend of Oasis, and Astal were very underrated games. Still fun to play to this day.

"well Wii U owners could" damn, why do you have to attack me and the 10 other Wii U owners like that? At least I dodged the Saturn bullet, after being burned by the 32X. But then I jumped on the Dreamcast wagon and cried all the way to the Wii U with that decision...

Literally didnt know ANYBODY who had a Saturn growing up. People had Genesis and SNES, people had Playstation and N64, but zero Saturns. I knew literally 1 person that had a Dreamcast when the next gen dropped, but lots of Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube owners

So I was a Genesis kid, and I remember my Dad bringing home a Saturn one day (this also happened with a Jaguar), he was in the Coast Guard and some of the people he worked with would just give him or let him borrow consoles. And he brought a Saturn home one day...I played it for like 2 hours and went back to my Genesis. It's a vague memory at this point, but I remember being so ridiculously underwhelmed that I just went back to the tried and true. We had the Saturn for maybe 2 weeks then my Dad gave it back to his co-worker and I never thought twice about it. Eventually would switch to the PS1 and have been PlayStation ever since. But the Saturn is one of those weird consoles where I know I played it...but I literally remember nothing about it. It wasn't something talked about among my friends, it wasn't advertised a lot, no one really cared.

What a mistake that was refusing to work with Sony and it came back to bite them or should i say hunt them ..I wish i could see their facee when they realized their mistake in refusing to work with Sony..Sega really ruined themselves with all those bad decision they made..One after the other..I actually don't feel bad for them..The people in charge of Sega didn't know what they were doing i don't blame the guy from the States for leaving Sega....Later

The more I learn about how Sega worked during the 90s the more I understand why they failed, and to me the biggest issue was the office in Japan, didn't understand the USA market, or they didn't trust the opinion of Saga in the USA.

I had a Saturn. All my friends went with PlayStation. The Saturn just couldn't do 3d graphics as well and that was the direction the games were going. It didn't take long for PlayStation to be the obvious choice.

Everyone should watch the Shenmue Saturn prototype. Considering the hardware difficulties, it's absolutely INSANE that a game like that was being made on Saturn hardware. LIGHTYEARS ahead of anything on PS1 or N64.

As a kid, we owned an N64 and then a Dreamcast, as did a couple of my friends. I hadn't even heard of the existence of the Saturn until probably a decade later. I never understood why the Dreamcast seemed to get the bulk of the blame for killing Sega's consoles. It had so many good games: not one, but two mainline Sonic games (in 3D!), Jet Grind Radio, Crazy Taxi, Power Stone... Meanwhile, I look at the Saturn lineup and, well, Nights looks cool. I've heard Panzer dragoon is good too.

Hearing about the Saturn's success in Japan puts things more in perspective though. It's insane that 3/4 of its library was never localized.

While the Saturn didn't have that many games no matter where you were, the US got absolutely shafted when it came to games. Hell, we never got some of the best games the Saturn had. I mean, maybe back in 1995, people didn't really care for the type of games that Japan got exclusively, but Radiant Silvergun, Dead or Alive, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner Soul Hackers, hell, my personal favorite of this list, Policenauts, these games would've smacked if they were brought to the US (except maybe Soul Hackers. You see what they did to Persona 1?) The Saturn had so much potential when it came to localized games, hell, potential in general, but then Sega of Japan decided to treat Sega of America like absolute shit. Thankfully, they got a lot of good games localized on the Dreamcast. And then the PS2 smothered the Dreamcast in its crib, which, sadly, is probably for the better, tbh.

BTW Sega megadrive/genesis was a flop in Japan/Asia (pc engine/TurboGrafx16 was more successful)

And Sega Saturn was kinda successful in Japan. This is why the 2 console with the most untranslated jrpg ratio was pc engine, and sega saturn ... at least at they time, nowadays more and more fan translation releases like Sakura Wars, ginga ojousama densetsu yuna.

Fuck Sega of Japan and fuck Yuji Naka. It's a miracle Sega survived through that shithole in the 90s and through the 2000s.

I think that Sega of America's envisioned path forward for Sega in the mid 90s was arguably worse than Sega of Japan's. The 32X was a horrible idea from day one. Lack of support killed it, yes, but even if they had supported it through the 90s, ask yourself how sustainable it is to compete against other, more powerful consoles with a peripheral? I remember Kalinski's argument in the book being that SNES was doing quite well at the time, even with PS1 right around the corner. But the thing is, those later SNES games were powered by chips in the games themselves. You still only needed to buy the console and maybe a slightly more expensive game. 32X required more from the customer, and on top of that, they didn't want there to be a Saturn at all? Banking everything on 32X would have crashed Sega even faster than what we saw unfold.

I love my Sega Saturn, I bought it way back in the later 90's at Toys R Us. I got the bundle pack that had Virtua Fighter 2, Daytona USA, and Virtua Cop. It also had Demos of Sega Rally and Nights. Not only that but I bought Street Fighter Alpha 2 which was still popular at arcades at the time. As time went on I built my collection to include Guardian Heroes, Radiant Silvergun, Capcoms Marvel Superheroes, X-Men vs Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom. I can't say enough about how awesome a 2D console the Saturn is.
