Today is the day I brought myself to finish Engage. Gods the story infuriated me but hey, gameplay was fun and Diamant, Goldmary, Rosado and Merrin were my best units, they decimated everything, loved that.

Oh fuck, that with Diamante and Sigurd fucking killed me, there's no way the localizers will let any of that stuff through in a potential FE4 remake and its a shame.

yeah, couple the bad translation and I dont think I will buy any Fire Emblem in the future thats not on a discount. Only exception will maybe be an FE4 remake.

Engage frustrated me a lot with how horrible the first impression are in this game. The v tuber design, the horrible 4kids theme song, the twins being the first characters u meet and they fanboy, how many of the cast leave a bad first impression meeting you either simping for the divine dragon or being annoying (the party priest who did a cringy wolf howl). Same with the supports if I have to wait for a support to find out why I should like a character then it fails because by that point I lost interest in that character (Celine for example who wouldn’t shut up about tea in the support I got from her. Or kagetsu who is honestly just a nice guy but I really did not care for him at all he was just useful). Heck many of them I can’t remember their names because they did nothing of relevance.

However I’m more frustrated how this is an anniversary game yet it’s so half assed. The past heroes rarely talk about their history in the past games and only briefly mention in their own prologues. If newcomers did not know anything about them they probably still won’t and veterans will be disappointed on how minuscule they are refrence in especially byleth who was the latest hero before alear. Engage isn’t good for newcomers to recommend since it’s bland it be an insult for them to think all fire emblem games are like this. It’s a game that’s hard to recommend because it has amazing gameplay but the bland story and characters will make them not want to continue especially since more than half the cast are either annoying or have very little input in this game

I’m kinda of glad now that months gone by that people are finally seeing the flaws instead of just kissing the games ass for being the newest game. Engage is flaw are very noticeable and it’s reason why it’s so unmemorable in the fandom (their barely any fanart discussions memes or stuff in this game) people played and dropped it. It’s a game that will get forgotten

Okay on to a more serious note, looks like I wasn't missing much by not picking up this game. Story is one of my favorite things about any game, and it's a shame to see it so disregarded in this entry to the series.

shin megami tensei is 2 years older then fire emblem persona 1 is 6 years older.

how is fire emblem stealing anything from persona.

you know ignoring that characters relationships being a game mechanic is older then them both. this is so easy to fact check dude wtf.

Engage is more split than its protagonist's hair.

3H has crappy gameplay & maps but good everything else. Engage is the opposite. Hopefully the next one just has both.

And one funny thing when it comes to Alear's design. When you look at the Shinza Bansho series, more specifically the character Mithra, you can see that she shares many design ideas as Alear and yet she looks far less gaudy and mismatched thanks to the designer known basic design cohesion.

Engage is superior to 3H in every way for the sole fact that Alear isn't a block of wood despite the fact that everyone in 3H thinks Byleth is the best thing ever since sliced bread and yet we never actually get to see or experience this ourselves because they are a silent protagonist. EVERYONE adores Byleth and there's very little reason for that to even happen other than them being a good teacher and the 3 Lords swooning over them instantly. Also, Engage's story isn't split into 4 subpar stories that only get worse the more you think about them.

This game and fates are such a tragic case of solid mechanics ( mostly) poisoned with Farmville mechanics and op dlc

That dialogue is so so bad. Like holy shit. Just to remind myself of what normal dialogue sounds like I rewatched some of the cutscenes from Awakening and the "No reaction, was I wrong then?" and Marth no more scenes are so extremely effective.

And Awakening is one of the weakest stories in the franchise.

It is unconventional to say the least, but it never acts like it isn't.
Engage always knows what it is, and it some Anime 101.

I built Jean and honestly he's my best unit. He's unhittable, indestructible, and has good stats. Actually the second Jesus Christ.

I think I agree with every single opinion you expressed here. I still had a good time because even lower tier FE is still a great experience but yeah. Why IS thinks it has to be intriguing plot, characters and world building vs good maps and gameplay just makes no sense. Fire Emblem enthralled so many of us because it did all of those things well, not with one over the others

I actually lost a lot of units on my first play through (hard mode, refused to overuse time crystals)

Even then, I still had some spare units (though severely under leveled)

Did anyone ever figure out what was going on with the Zero Emblem.

This is such an amazing review! I found this video by searching "Fire Emblem Engage Review," because I wanted to research what folks were saying about the game while drafting my own review. However, after watching yours, I feel like I am most likely going to skip reviewing this game entirely, as I feel I would have nothing to add! This is comprehensive and well written and just an excellent video.

I can tell you love the series a lot, and some of my fav parts of the video were when you were riffing about Fire Emblem in general, or referencing the strengths of past games. i especially liked your characterization/contextualization of Pent's introduction. when i was a kid that chapter blew my mind, which only became more interesting when my fav unit, erk, had a support with this random sage in the middle of the desert who hangs out with athos. that was my jam game

just a hella solid and super well written review man this is really great. so happy i found this. while i don't agree with all of your opinions on this game or the series, you still changed my mind quite a bit about engage. sick ass vid

My opinion is certainly not popular, but I will say it anyway...
I ¨ignore half of it¨ in other games anyway. 🤷‍♂
For example, in Three Houses I simply cannot stand traveling the same monastery grounds over and over and over again... doing the same things over and over and over again....😩
And Echoes felt more like a visual novel than a game🤦‍♂
Social life and story is a good thing in games...sure !!
But, for gods sake, please don´t put so much emphasis on it!! Im here mostly for the strategic gameplay and char building.

Fat smelly nerds where programing the gameplay, while brightly colored shide shaved Hair people was writing the story.

When the quick review is an hour

The only thing I disagree with is that characters seeming sympathetic as they die is bad storytelling. I think it was done phenomenally in Demon Slayer and was just done horrendously here.

I started skipping every cutscene by chapter 6 and it ended up being a pretty good game

Come to think of it, the red-blue split design is pretty much an allegory of the discrete split quality of this game.

Tbf watching Alear sleep was kinda the MCs only purpose in the world for a long time. It's in the lore. Why would everyone stop doing their favorite past time just because the bozo decided to wake up?

Wish I’d watched this video before Black Friday, but at least now I know to hit the Skip button. Thanks for the great video! The music is going to be the biggest disappointment. After 4 Three Houses play through a I just was craving MORE fire emblem, but I guess a fifth play through of a game I already know the story to may have been more entertaining than a bad story I don’t know.

Ngl the music sounds like it could be from pokemon. Not bad, but, well... Pokemon's quality is rather inconsistent.
