While I believe that the persecution that Mary perpetrated against the Protestants was hoorific in her later years it was nothing in comparison to what Henry the 8th did with Anne Boleyn by butchering 57000 Catholics during his Reign of Terror. Not only did Henry the 8th persecute his own people, he abused Queen Catherine, Princess Mary and Elizabeth with neglect, fear and intimidation. How anyone could compare Queen Mary with Henry the 8th is incomprehensible.

It's mad that Mary was the first female monarch in the history of England and that people were accepting of that, given attitudes at the time.

Thats a little unfair. You forget who her mother was. Catherine of Aragon aside. Queen Mary watched as Catholics were burnt and persecuted. Her religion so deeply ingrained she wanted to "repair" the damage done to her faith. With Henry VIII as her other mentoring parent is it any wonder she became fanatical.

Thomas Cranmer perhaps does not get as much credit as say a Luther or a Calvin in terms of his overall importance or at least globally recognizable in terms of accomplishments to the Protestant faith. This is perhaps because he tried to work within the system to reform it, rather than always taking it head on like some others. However, he was crucial to the development of a branch of that faith, was a friend and ally to other branches of the same faith, believed in many of the same fundamentals and to me, should be considered equally amongst the giants of Protestantism. As a Protestant, but not an Anglican, I find him fascinating from a historical perspective and he certainly went out with a bang in the end.

after all, it was the accepted convention to express oneself sentimentally in letters even when writing to one's bitterest enemy.

Cossacks response letter to Ottoman Sultan;

"The cursed Sultan, Turkish Caesar's son, and attendant of the infernal Lucifer in the abyss of hell, Turkish emperor, footstool of the Greeks, cook of Macedonians, locksmith of Babylonians, wheelwright of Jerusalem, drunkard of Assyria, swineherd of greater and lesser Egypt, sausage of Alexandria, and dog of Armenians, the cursed childish knave upon earth and the world, the great fool of Kamenets-Podolsky and the country, and a nasty pig in the world -

She was among England’s greatest queens, the object of the blackest slanders by the godless Prostitants. And these Prostitants? Lunatics, murderers, thieves, mercenaries…an unspeakable rogues gallery.

Arguably the most misunderstood and unfairly treated figures in history. A bloody mary myth of this Tyrannical catholic queen concocted by Protestant historians. Considering her father was worse by several orders of magnitude Henry Vlll killed more people than any other English Monarch with between 57-60k people killed for various reasons compared to the 280 people Mary burned purely on the grounds of Hersey. Mary is accused of being a bad Monarch, the worse English Monarch in fact, yeah because changing your kingdoms religion on a whim causing political, religious destabilization and rebellion all because you wanted a son, is such a better example of what a great Monarch does right? The Protestants used Mary's brother Edward on his deathbed in sidestepping the Third Secession act and then hands the crown to a 9 day interloper, yeah thats just something great Monarchs do right? In fact you can make a strong case that Henry Vlll was a worse monarch then Mary was and he was far worse a human being then his daughter ever was. Just 2 mere days after his coronation Henry already threw 2 of his father's ministers in the tower and executed them, so he wasted no time in chopping off heads.
Henry was far more sadistic than Mary was, she burned those Protestants she believed wanted her dead (which was true) and had wanted her off the throne (also true) Mary's father, he burned, hung, crushed, boiled, beheaded and used other intuitive methods of pain an suffering on innocent people just because he could.
If Henry being a cruel sadistic Monarch wasn't bad enough he was a worse husband even worse of a father not just to Mary but Elizabeth also. Yet because her father had a far longer reign, his actions are often watered down and overshadowed by what Mary did.

Based on the paintings of her, she must have been the ugliest English queen that ever has been – including all the queen consorts. Her face looks like the face of a young-ish but not-so-handsome man. That is what I think of Queen Mary I.

Love or hate her, it was Mary who undid not one, but two generations of financial mismanagement. Unlike so many predecessors, her government was working the instant she took the throne because she was smart with compiling officials in anticipation of taking the reigns. The credit for her proactive approach of commissioning cartographers, explorers, and business representatives is unfortunately given to Elizabeth I.

Mary was HIGHLY proactive, and was unlucky, while Elizabeth ruled through inaction, and got extremely lucky. I genuinely believe that had Mary lived longer, obtained the throne sooner, or had better luck, she'd have a better image. Her biggest issues were that she overly favored the Spanish, due much to her mother's lineage, and the abuse, betrayal, and objectification she received from English men most of her life. She wasn't perfect, but calling her a failure simply is untrue.

No. Not the worst. Just the shortest-lived. If you're going to compare the performance of regnant Queens, you have to do it amongst those who had a chance to prove what kind of Queen they could be. Mary didn't have that chance. Her life tells us she would have a been a conscientious and loyal steely-eyed missile Queen. All we had a chance to see of her was the time she spent taking the throne and then fighting to keep it. If that's what we're judging her on, then she gets lost in the crowd of monarchs who had to kill people to keep their crown. If this is the case, then they can all be called bloody. Mary doesn't even stand out.

One thing that I learned from Dan Jones is that history is written by the victors. I don't think we'll ever know what truly happened behind the throne. I love this series and so glad I came across it. Finally, the algorithm got it right! Thank you so much for posting. 💞

The Lady Jane Grey had a miserable life and it is so sad that she never experienced anything else. This is an excerpt from her own diary.
"For when I am in presence either of father or mother; whether I speak, keep silence, sit, stand, or go, eat, drink, be merry, or sad, be sewing, playing, dancing, or doing any thing else; I must do it, as it were, in such weight, measure, and number, even so perfectly, as God made the world; or else I am so sharply taunted, so cruelly threatened, yea presently sometimes with pinches, nips, and bobs, and other ways (which I will not name for the honour I bear them) so without measure misordered, that I think myself in hell".

I think the main reason why she could not get behind the reglion that was not her own because what did to her and her mother.
