I have a pretty large library at home and I read a lot and I love this movie. I guess some people just have to have explosions and car chases in a movie

A great chick flick compromise because it isn't too painful to watch as long as you enjoy books. Candles, a little wine, you might get lucky. All bookshop owners are not created equally. This woman is a hero. I'll give it a 7.

Hmmm can't say I agree with these reviews at all...It's a very poignant film in IMO, and the lack of respect these reviewers show to its content is testimony to the central message of the film; we live in a culture where the intellect is not cherished or nurtured. I bet if there was some more guns or sex they would've liked it more. Still you've provided me with some good commentary for an English lesson, and given another great advert of American cultural appreciation.

Regardless of your review.
I didn't feel the need to analyse it soo much.
Was a good movie in my opinion.
Compared to some of the crap around, that's being released.

Had she opened a public Library!!
For the good of the people from whence she came, who couldn’t afford to buy books, much less pursue the book shops of London... I would be more interested.

But hey, that’s just me and my little ole socialist self, ignore it, Hollywood.
At your own peril.

So intellectually incurious folks can “review” movies. Thanks, democracy.

1) Expected a love story or savior to redeem the victim-heroine ... not just some bawdy manifestation of blithering sinful hypocrites lurking in every 'British' character.
2) Recorded' books vs. 'recorded' art as a liberal-conservative dispute? ... oh PLEASE! The author might should have pondered: books and art = the same medium.
3) About a dozen devils outnumber zero non-devils by the end.
4) There's no procession for the ("courageous?") (crucified?) victim, no closure, no ontological primitive(s), no redemption, etc. ... just a victimized Emily Mortimer sailing off.

Your review of "the bookshop" is very sad - like 8th graders disappointed.

The silent moments speak the most in this movie. The scene with Brandish and Florence on the beach is priceless. "Very british" = very good !

I think the film suffers because the viewer automatically thinks of "Chocolat," which appears to share the same premise. In fact, the novel of "The Bookshop" (which I read after watching the movie) is extremely down to earth and realistic, and not a bit like "Chocolat." It's a slice of 50s British life, and the social critique is encased in the dreary story itself. BTW, the movie's rather shocking ending, which involves a teenage girl and arson, is NOT in the novel at all. I was very taken aback when this gentle story veered into crime show territory, and I kept wondering how the evil girl and the bookshop owner managed to avoid arrest and prison for this obvious crime. As it turns out, this truly awful plot point was merely tacked on by the producer, who probably thought the novel's anticlimactic fizzle wouldn't cut it with today's audiences.

I was thinking "Chocolat" all the way through expecting it to follow the same formula. But then it span down hill so fast. Not the ending I was expecting at all. In fact it left me feeling "IS that it? Where's the ending? how are you going to wrap this up?" I have a suggestion how they could have improved the film without changing it. Have a prologue of the woman at the end being asked, "What made you want to open a bookshop?" Then the whole film would have made sense.

Man, I haven't seen a video by this channel in a few years. Disappointed they're still doing the awkward being present at the review but not contributing anything because he/she hasn't seen the movie thing... Also a ton of narration?? There were just a few lines scattered throughout the film.

Also Matt, where's your goat?

I don’t care about the movie, I think that I’ve finally seen the penultimate Christy water glass!

I can't believe it was cancelled. The show was produced by TYT Network who abruptly cancelled ALL of their entertainment shows without ever announcing any kind of fund raising effort to save them!
