Assault Rifles are rifles, SMGs are guns.
You were right in the video in saying it's the type of round they use.

Assault rifles will use rifle cartridges. Which usually means supersonic bullets and much faster muzzle velocities. The size of the round isn't as important, but the casing is because its usually larger and holds more powder. This is why assault rifles need longer barrels than SMGs in order to make use of all that powder expanding to accelerate the bullet. This also means they are harder to control and (in the real world) primarily fire in semi-auto, only sometimes do they have a full auto feature (typical military issue M4 is not full auto). The rounds usually look long and pointy.

SMGs use pistol (gun) cartridges. They usually have subsonic rounds and slower muzzle velocities. This is also why they are much quieter with suppressors. This makes them much easier to control and are almost exclusively fired in full auto. They don't have as much kinetic force as a result, and normally can't do well to penetrate armor. The rounds are usually rounded and stubby.

There are exceptions in both directions. Like the Honey Badger (Chimera in game) which is a kind of both, because it fires 300 black out rounds which are typically subsonic, but the casing is actually from a 5.56 round (the bullet is a .300). So it has an AR bullet and an AR casing but shoots like an SMG. Likewise the P90 (PDSW528 in game) was designed behind the 5.7mm round which is a pistol round who's purpose was to match the effectiveness of rifle rounds. So you have an SMG that performs like an AR because even though it uses a pistol round, that round was designed to be as effective as rifle rounds for armor penetration.

Honestly any ideas on how to get the Kastov 74U the quickest? I saw that it's a bunch of stuff just to get it bro, really deterring me from even trying to do the challenges.

I didn't spend £70 on mw3 to still use mw2 guns

.762 is a powerful round and wouldn't work in a sub machine gun theu are usually built smaller and lighter so it wouldnt be ideal to use that powerful of a round.
