Wasn't this the mine group whose CEO was told to get into mining by a squirrel? Or...who am I thinking of? No, like, seriously, 'told to get into mining by a squirrel' is assured, I just don't recall if it involved THESE guys, but I think it did.

All underground mines result in some subsidence. Long Wall Machines take a more or less horizontal slice out ie a coal seam or panel that is very long thousands of yards and 1,000 yards wide. It results in a more even subsidence on the surface, often unnoticeable to the casual observer. The floor and ceiling of the the mine gradually subside until they touch usually a hundreds of feet behind the Long Wall Machine, the hydraulic rams on the back side of the machine gradually reducing support as the machine moves forward. On the other hand pillar and post results in a patchwork - checker board patter of humps and dips over a long term as the pillars collapse and the mine gradually collapses. Long Wall Mining is considered to be a safer more efficient and has less impact on the surface above the mine. Managing ventilation in a mine is tricky, and more so if you neglect it. Each mining machine is supposed to have an explosive gas detector on it, supposed to.... When you don't have and maintain gas sensors the result is inevitable .

Thank you for covering this disaster. This happened in my community and I can still remember the day it occurred as I was in middle school around that time. It rocked our community so hard that school was called off for a week. 3 generations of a single family passed in that explosion, some of which my brothers were very close to and worked with at one point. I still see the father of one of the men in the area. I still have family working in those mines and the Coal Industry in the Appalachians is still very flawed. However with more people becoming educated about the dangers of Coal Mining I hope that it can shed like on the safety of the industry.

Peabody coal Co did a lot of damage in Navajo and Hopi reservations in Arizona even setting tribes against each other in 1970s and Pres Gerald Ford had to get involved. A lot of fresh water was destroyed moving the coal.

We live is a sick twisted world where the ownership class get away with conspiracy to commit mass murder by failing to maintain a safe work place. Why it is considered reasonable that these people are able to resume executive control of dangerous industries is beyond me. An executive group that conspires to expose their employees to unnecessary risk should be banned from ever holding such responsibilities again.

Some of these comments remind me why I'm moving back to my homeland Spain, after living in WV as an outspoken communist working in manufacturing and advocating for unions, only to be discriminated against and pushed out illegally (P&G contractor D.B. schenker forklift operator in Martinsville)
They worked us to the bone, 12 hour night shifts, all of us walked away with injuries we couldn't report or we'd get disciplined.
Great video as always John!

I'm surprised none of the miners quit on the spot of being threatened by the company they work for.
One would argue that they could have broke the news earlier and saved more lives.
I'm sure they did, of course, considering the city of Dolton, Illinois is in a relatively similar situation with their "super mayor" in more recent news.

The coal dust every day was so thick you could barely see 30 feet.
But we are not allowed to talk about this because of the new Mine Safety Bill that is now law.

It prevents speaking about mine's safety issues under the argument that it is a National Security issue.

Equipment not kept in good working order. Most accidents caused by a series of unsafe action either passive or deliberate.
