Your absolutely correct about Tags. To be honest, what I don't like bout sketchup is the Interface design. It looks like a kids software. I hope they change it.

Somebody can tell me why it is so difficult to get models in sketchup? Now look like many of them are hidden so I must to waist lots time finding some good samples now they are supporting people that sell their products. Can be possible if somebody can tell me? How to use properly the model library?Thank you

I'm a complete novice at CAD, and have downloaded 'Sketchup Make 2017, being a free download, just to try it out first. However I'm struggling to do what I want, and wondered if you could advise me the best option of software for my needs.
I'm an architect and want to produce a full set of dimensioned 2D construction drawings, e.g. structural, architectural layout and services drawings, details etc., just as I would on a drawing board, and then create a 3D model from those plans.
With Sketchup make, I cannot even get started with a gridline base plan, unless I just don't know how....
I'm retired and only producing documents for my private use on my personal / occasional developments, and was hoping to avoid long term subscriptions, as the software would not be in continual use, as in an architectural practice. I would not have a problem with a years subscription if necessary, as long as I can save my work to my laptop outside the software, so I don't lose it if a subscription expires.
I would happily continue drawing on paper, but now I live in the tropics and am getting tired of pens drying / seizing up, tracing paper curling up, and copy negatives are unavailable.

Hello Math! I am trying to use your section isolation trick in my models with Color by Tag and is working in sketchup but when i send it to layout is showing the background geometry again. Have you noticed that? Do you have any advice to this?. Actually would be a great improve to have an intelligent style that do this without changing transparency settings to each tag. Cheers!

Recently I experienced a weird thing.
In windows 10 and sketchup 2017,
I was working on a big project (3 skp files simultaneously.) All of the files were over 200 MB size. My computer was freezing frequently. Then I returned into sketchup 2020 in windows 8 and worked with the same files. But there it was not freezing.
So, is the problem with windows 10 or sketchup 2017?

Unless Trimble brings back the free, NON web based Version and a. Version for LINUX, I will never use SU again. They shot themselves in the foot and got very greedy. I do t k kw WHO (or what) is running thier marketing dept, but I would recommend a dismissal. They would make a TON more money wirh a more REASONABLE ($50) licensing fee and a non web based version. Yoy habe ZERO distribution costs now, (no CDs/DVDs, packaging etc) stop gouging us!!!

I've used Chief Architect, and Revit, which both have their irritating quirks. Now I'm looking at Sketchup. I have great hopes. HaHaHa
It's like learning another language, except worse because the same term means something different.

So do you do home layouts for people who are not good at using the software? I tried the free version and could not figure it out. Even paid an online tutorial service to learn.

know anything about new statistics feature in Sketchup?
I have missed a lot in my version 8.

For example, you miss information in the component
window how many component definitions have how
many instances or how many copies. And where they
are located in your model.

Then, you have no way in version 8 to now how many
elements with a certain material there are in your model.
Or say all elements with a certain color. And where
they are located in your model.

How is that in the new version?

I am planing on design a large scale maglev design for a startram, would this software be ideal??
Also should I use rather use blender because I'm not really sure where to get the money for this

There's something to expect from SketchUp.
Modeling for Freeform is still a shame
If this part is implemented, I think it will be the best modeling program.

Have they added search/replace functionality into Layout yet? I''m using 2018 (perpetual license). We recently changed building floor-to-floor elevations by a couple inches per floor. As all the drawings were already completed, I just needed to search and replace elevation tags. Had to manually change 80 separate tags, which could have been done in under a minute w/ search and replace.


I know, because I changed all my AutoCAD wall section tags in under a minute. It's a complicated 180,000sf building, so lots of drawings.

Do we have the option to save files on a hard drive with sketchup 2020? I am still using SU 2017 because, I did not want to upgrade to SU2019 and have to save my files to the cloud. What can you tell us about saving files????

Upgrading from sketchup one or (2000) it's not worth upgrading to 2020 because it's the same crap.

Am lost for words. These people at Trimble are the most lazy fukrs in world history. Those updates should had been in version of sketchup ONE, Yes the one back in 2000. 20 years have pass and they took the layers names out only because people from photoshop were asking about getting confused. The worst thing about it is that these MOFOS listened..

The hidden object show in rendering?

Separating hidden lines and hidden objects is nice, bounding box grips are nice, LayOut viewport lock is nice, and you didn't mention that they fixed those messed up lines that sometimes appear on PDF export. That happens a lot to me, and I'm happy they fixed it. But besides this, same as usual, real priorities get ignored. In my opinion, layers (tags) should be group-able like in Photoshop, same goes for scene tabs, 30-40 of scene tabs is a regular thing for me. Mirror tool should not be a plugin in 2020, animation needs improvement, or a standalone app if it can't be done in SketchUp. If we have LayOut, they could make something similar for animation. LayOut performance is still crap, that needs some attention ASAP. It's just too slow. Lineweights should be controllable, and coloring fills, outlines, texts makes no sense. Why do I have to click fill then color, outline then color, text then color, can't fill, outline and text be buttons controlled in color menu? Back to SketchUp, when making a section cut, fill color should be controlled per object or "tag". But I like that they seem to speed up their releases lately, I hope some of these get addressed soon.

For me, the drag on Layout development has been a real 'mare. But Layout is now nearer to where it should be. As part of my workflow to communicate ideas as quickly as possible (using BOTH elements of the programme), this is a game-changer.

I would like to think "they" could have come up with something better than "tag", which is very unnatural and used in many applications as a "memory or find (search) tool. i.e.; area, overlay, panel, stratum, zone, board, sheet, mask...

Nice! every year i hope and wait for trimble to make an easiest way of adding new patterns (hatch) on layout. Maybe next year.

Good review, Matt. I just wish they'd fix some very glaring shortcomings - like having to click in the model on a Mac to exit the Layer naming field!
