Grandpa and his kin where from Tennessee.He started working in the coal mine with his father at a very young age,probably younger than what was legal..Back then they had 2 pair of overalls,one for work and a new pair for Sunday.Sunday was a special day because everyone would get together for church then later the family would have a dinner of roast Guinea fowl.. Since the average paycheck wouldn’t last the week for a family of coal miners,the mine owner released Guinea fowl all over the woods for families to hunt.Although my grandparents and their kin are all gone today,you can still find plenty of Guinea fowl all over the area.Nobody hunts them because they are only meant to be taken by those who haven’t the means to bring home food for the family...Depression era Appalachian folks didn’t know they where poor until the government convinced them that they needed more..I loved hearing my grandparents talk about the days they grew up in the early 1900s..That was “Country”...I own 2 pair overalls today for working around the ranch,one pair for the work week,one for Sunday as a reminder of how blessed and good we have it living so easy today..
