RIBA House of the Year 2023 shortlist: Made of Sand

I’m so tired of seeing architects design ugly houses and interiors especially when they don’t fit in with the surroundings. What is it with all this packing-crate interiors look? I hate it.

Exterior should have continued to be that brick type facade. It looks disjointed and somewhat unwelcoming. It was hard to embrace the interiors when the exterior failed to embrace or comfort the soul…

It looks like a really bad DIY job . Gross .
If I’d paid an architect for that design I would be asking for my money back .

I love it how they turned a dull cottage into something liveable

The kitchen in the middle of the big hallway might not feel as warm as the hearth of a cottage needs to be.

I would need a lot more convincing that its nothing more than an old fashioned lean-to cobbled on, I sure that many previous generations would have wondered what the fuss was about as they “threw” things like that up out of what ever to suit needs, a wash house etc.

God it's awful. What has happened with RIBA this year. "Made of Sand" .... sand miners hundreds of years ago ??????

Quite a challenge initially but seems to work really well. Find the interior a bit oppressive. What a lovely location.
