As one of the “living the dream” bogans Mr C so wonderfully describes, I’d like to say this is all fabulous advice. I suspect there are more overweight rig combinations out there than we care to imagine. One point I’d love to see clarified is whether rear suspension upgrades on vehicles like the Pajero allow for the capacity to load it beyond the manufacturer’s specifications and increase the overall GCM rating.

I often see old grandpas with canes in caravan parks with big 4WDs and huge caravans and totally unable to drive these rigs safely. With age, the mind becomes calcified.

Many good comments from others
BUT
The item that never gets a mention is the size of the vans versus the weight versus the hight
If you have a very large van that is built very light ( read tin can Rubbish) some vans are almost 3 m high by 6 or 7 long , the sail area is huge, add a truck going past at 100kms , the wind load is enough to cause massive swaying of the entire rig, then again add in how many wheels the van rides on (2 or 4) and how high above the road it sits , all this has very large effect on how the van will tow. No where that I can find is there any rules relating to this, but I feel that this is half the reason a lot of vans turn over in front of trucks or just after a truck goes past the other way. Short pop top van can weigh the same as a long high van but will tow way better.
What is your thoughts on this John.

Hi John, in countries that have a decent recharging network like there in SheepShaggerStan, an EV can be contemplated as a tow vehicle for a caravan. Currently (sic) there are several Hyundai/Kia EV models capable of hauling 1500kg, which is right on the money for a mid-size single-axle caravan. The big plus is that you can stop anywhere and use the EV to power up the caravan for a minimal loss of range. A smaller plus is all that access to instant torque. An EV initially shifts a caravan much easier than any diesel. Owners of EV-towed caravans report a 20 per cent loss of range when hooked up and driving down the highway. That's hardly the 'falling off a cliff' you mention.

Prado 180 litres of fuel capacity and no matter what you drive , you are not going anywhere without fuel, and I had a Pajero and it was very fussy on fuel, any contamination and it would stop on every corner on the way home and contamination is a big worry out back. The same with my sons Mits Magna , we would sell the fuel to his brother in law with a Hyundai used it no worries .

Hi JC (one of my fav YTers), I have a Paj Sport 2022 loaded with accessories including myself adding up to 370kg payload. Also has a lift kit with airbags - really helps. Towing an Austrack 15ft tare weight 2.3 and payload 250 kg (includes only 50 kg water in the tanks). No problem towing at 90 to 100 km on flat or low / short rise hills. However on climbing the Main Range or Toowoomba ranges for example PS can start to over heat if you dont watch the revs. Solution to that is put the PS in 4wd high and leave it on automatic, keep the revs below where the temp gauge moves from halfway. The cost is the embarresment of chugging along at 30km per hour for a short period of time. Otherwise PS is a good choice. :(

Hi Johnny I took your advice 18 months ago and ordered a Pajero sports GLS 4x4. I’ve had the car 13 months and nothing but issues. Rear door won’t operate at times. Sensors going off for no reason slamming on the breaks not good with a car on your ass. Back to Mitsubishi next week for the 3rd time. My first Mitsubishi and last. Back to Isuzu.

Jayco has released a new braking sysrem on their shopping trolly towed shitwa, very close to EBS on truck trailer, when sway is detected, it applies it's own braking force, to anchor, all back in place, I'm thinking whilst I stroke grey beard, it will not be long before everyone has this, and with new hitches, McHitcth, for example Aussie made, and break away switches, we will see less carnage out on the road, to Dingo Piss Creek, Please consider a story on McHitch, it is local in NSW and a real MALS invemtion... There are some, beleive it or not, good Aussie 4wd inventions, all worthy of a mention.

The LC200 and LC300 keep being touted as the best tow vehicle for 3000-3500kg. In fairness the LR Defender 110 or 130 is actually superior as a tow vehicle and the Discovery 5 isn’t any worse.

Always good to hear your opinion (Jc)
As a 2022 exceed owner and previous triton owner, the Ps is a vast improvement ,especially the 8sp box.
On the triton, the turbo lag is way more noticeable. With regard to using the PS to go to piss dingo ville-dont, forget the spare turbo intercooler hoses ( can't believe mitsi hasn't sorted this shiyt out yet??). Also for those who may consider a Roof top tent for their PS-the dynamic and static load limits are really designed for perhaps-----very very under nourished pigmeys.
Also- when servicing -watch out for those service departments that love to charge for those gold plated cabin filters ????? Peace ✌️

Towing 2T with a Pajero sport what a joke, small engine, small fuel tank combined with crap suspension, in my humble opinion serious towing anything greater than 1.5T requires at least a 3L TD as I found out the hard way in the past, exception would be a large petrol V8. I think JC must be getting a kickback from Mits. I'm not a advocating for any particular model of tow vehicle, and if you want a brand new unit there are not a lot of choices out there. I wouldn't consider any of the UTE's up to 3.5T towing, they are also a joke - fancy a dual horse float with 2 large horses behind a loaded Ranger, it's a disaster waiting to happen. look at the GCM if it's not around 6.5T or more forget it. There is also a huge range of second hand big engined luxury vehicles out there for the same money.

I would suggest they get a good semi tractor what ever is popular there Volvo, Mack, Freightliner etc. and a nice 45-50 foot long trailer so you have room to get away from her when you need to and if the trailer weighs 30,000 pounds it does not matter you could tow 80K or so pounds. Make sure the tractor has a sleeper so you have a place to sleep when she is really mad and you are all set. You could even teach her to drive it then she will really feel important.
