Since joining college I've been searching what's the best method for me to learn in a very effective way, finally I think I sorted it out by learning another language and I've already learned English and I consider myself I'm fluent in English as I feel comfortable using it with when it comes to talking about any topic in English sometimes I find myself more comfortable than my mother tongue (Arabic) and I'd like to say I'm on my journey to pick up German and I've learned from my mistakes during learning English for example ( I didn't practice from day and it's so frustrated because you study and put in a lot without talking,but I can say it helped me a lot to understand the language properly on top of that nt listening is so Strong and I can understand any accent in the world even the difficult ones...btw Olly you don't know how much we gain knowledge from your podcast 😅 it's been a long time since you've upload an episode 😅

Total Immersion and go slow. I speak 4 - native English, nationality French (school + 34 years residential), German (university + daily interaction) and Arabic (university + 16 years work + winding down now). Aged 62 and retired. 👍👍

Each person had their own language learning techniques and it all created the same results. Test the waters and see what tips work best for you.

Aside from immersion and actually forcing myself to use the language as much as possible, the most effective way for me has been to simply make it fun to learn. Sure, textbooks have their benefits, especially when you first start out, but I think most people get "turned off" by them pretty quickly and as a result, learning becomes a chore and you lose interest and might even find yourself making excuses to do it later (which eventually becomes never).
For me, finding friends who are native in the language I try to learn has been beneficial in many ways; for one thing, they're not as afraid of correcting you when you're wrong and it feels less scary (in loss of a better word) to make mistakes in front of friends than someone who is/feels like an authority figure (like a teacher). It's a more casual environment that lets you practice without the pressure.
Fun activities in the language also helps, whether watching movies or what have you. Karaoke has worked great for me since it challenges me to read, speak/sing and listen at the same time - plus, it's fun.

How are people who speak multiple romance languages able to keep them apart in their mind? I know English and French natively and I am trying to learn Spanish but it's kind of replacing French in my mind. I go to speak and find out I'm speaking the wrong language and I don't even notice unless someone looks puzzled.

This was very informative. It’s interesting that they all give different advice, and some mention apps that compete with their own products, which shows honesty. I tried to learn French 30 years ago, and even lived in Montreal. I recently revived my French and in a year it is far better than it was thanks to the internet and people like you giving good advice. I suspect all would agree that you must listen A LOT. My experience is to avoid most apps especially Duolingo. Babbel is a good intro. Podcasts are superb. Lingq is excellent. I’m sure there’s other good stuff I’ve not tried. I feel that traditional classroom based learning is not so good, you and others are giving better advice based on modern methods.

what's the need for this " fast " business? why not take pleasure in learning at a comfortable speed. I think you're missing so much by taking that path.

When in Spain or Portugal....i would take one-to-one lessons in Brazilian jiu jitsu , and secretly its a language lesson. Other countries ? Tennis coaching, or other stuff. Great fun, healthy, and surprisingly efficient for making good progress.

Thanks for this helpful video! I've always been worrying that i am wasting my time with the wrong method. It relaxed me to hear, that writing and working with paper can do as well. I love writing down thing. I love working with paper. I'm writing by hand (not printing) and I read it while writing. (sorry for my English, I'm no native speakter^^)

I love what Jo said about social media. I was on Twitter today searching through many accounts in order to find my target languages. I previously joined some motor racing and tennis accounts and realized today I should do more of this. I love Twitter because it's everyday language and there is a character limit so you get a nice little snippet to read. It's not too overwhelming but enough to pique your interest and pick up a few new words at a time as well as cementing some existing more repeated words in your memory. I even came across some polyglot accounts which was awesome! I also think Wouter's idea of using one language to learn another is brilliant! Wow, that's a really clever trick, no wonder he's got 29 on his list! There was also one very interesting one which uses funny pictures to make words in various languages stick in your mind.

The 2nd guys advuce, Luxa, was not helpful. The others actually gave methods that can be used.

I wish there was a way to get ahold of a curriculum and get an idea on what needs to be learned first. Say for Korean. I know grammar and vocab are both necessary but which grammar rules should be learned first?

I find the advice of connecting with the language on an emotional level very interesting and useful.
I live in a small country with a very hard language (Danish) where most of the population speaks English fluently as a second language so I have years of living here speaking and working in English and is very difficult for me to be fluent in the local language because is very-very hard for pronunciation but also everybody switches to English with foreigners. So I have built all my important relationships here in English or Spanish not in the local language,
I realize thanks to this video that THIS is maybe THE big "mental block" I have that prevents me from being motivated to learn Danish even when I have all the resources to learn at my disposal and for free... and this is the first time I realize it, thanks to this video.

Hi. I teach Spanish to high school teenagers. I have shared for them to acquire Spanish- 1) Get your ear acclimated to the Spanish sounds, especially the vowels to be able to pronounce any words. 2) With a song learn to conjugate AR, ER and IR. 3) Stand in front of your mirror at home- look at your mouth as you pronounce words 4) Watch tv and listen to songs in Spanish
5) You want real, authentic dialogue so while in class we focus on L/S/R and W 6) Go to Mexican restaurants and order only in Spanish. 7) If you have friends who speak the target language, which in my case would be Spanish, they have to talk to their friends in Spanish 8) Write your thoughts in YOUR SPANISH- they will be at different levels, so own your Spanish. 9) You Tube videos, such as yours. and 10) Learn children nursery rhymes in Spanish. Nursery rhymes are the foundation of every language for it's youth to acquire the language. ( I do not believe you LEARN a language. I believe you ACQUIRE a language. I believe our brain is wired for us to acquire languages. And I believe it taks at minimum 3 years due to language structures. After that, you are just acquiring new vocabulary. To get that new vocabulary you must start reading books, news papers, magazines, etc in the target language.) After that, do not be afraid to talk to folks. Just talk.
Most folks are eager to help you acquire Spanish.

I can make sentences but when it is time come to the complex sentences i can put together all these sentences and can’t get a meaning of it

Forgot his name, but real good old-fashioned POP (printing on paper) - I can relate! Granted, I am not of the digital generations - but seeing something on paper and being able to read it - it does help with both the cognates, the pronunciation as well as actually being able to understand what the H... is going on! And a textbook is always a good idea. Bought a language program for French a year ago, and one of the first videos from the assigned teacher turned me off: it was so obvious that she was unprepared, yet the video was deemed good enough for being posted on the language learning site. I gave up learning French at the time (had to beef up on my German very quickly so focused on that) but recently returned to French - only to see the dang same video, of course with the same evidence that the teacher hadn't really prepared for the taping. The teacher is also offering one-on-one tutoring, and while I am planning to partner up with a tutor, I am not going to sign up with her. I think a very important tip for language learners would be: find a program and a tutor that show the same commitment to your language learning success as you do.

printing out things is great, I agree. But I invest in blank notebooks, inks and fountainpens and copy stuff from interesting resources by hand (internet, freed pdfs, books I own and similar). that way I directly interact with the words actively.

I'm really surprised only one of them mentioned traveling... I mean, you can get most of the online resources for free, yes, it takes time and effort, a lot of it to find reliable ones for free, but it's possible. Meanwhile traveling takes money no matter what, you can't travel for free (you can travel low cost, but it's never 100%). And traveling gives you so much more than just language skills

Well, then suddenly I'm a Polyglot too 😮
I've noticed that most normal people think you can only start counting a language when you've reached at least CEFR C1. So, like, pretty fluent. 😂 I never tell people that "I can speak Japanese" because I feel like I'm only halfway through learning it...JLPT N3. I always say "I'm learning Japanese"... Because I can chat about some things, not everything, and make tons of mistakes.
But these guys out here counting any language they've started studying?? 😂
It's like the difference between normal language learners and some Polyglots is just having delulu 🙄😂

The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. Yea going to a foreign country is great but at the end it comes down to motivation and what a previous guy had spoken its about finding the emotional connection of why you want to learn the languge. I lived in spain for almost 3 years and still can't even speak fluently and carry a conversation. I met many americans and other expats living there as long as me and they can't even speak fluently either. Why ? they are too comfortable with people around them that can converse in English. Also going to another country to travel to learn a language is very expensive and you can start off with the cheaper resources at home and then when you get to a certain level go to the country to practice
