alacritty vs urxvt
1. themes, yes sure whatever. nowdays there is something called urxvtconfig that can help
2. change config on the fly - ok urxvt does not have that, but you can xrdb -m and restart
3. start with a custom class: urxvt can be started with a custom name and config can be applied by that name, and wm rules can be applied to that name.
4. you lost me
I do like Alacrity and I learned a few neat things about it here. It's no BS , that's for sure. It is very functional and minimalistic which I love. But how you feel about Alactritty is how I feel about Kitty, which I view as Alacritty's alter-eqo. I'm rooted in Kitty because it is every bit as fast, minimalistic, and it is Python! I could easily use Alacritty and be virtually as happy.
Ответитьhey just asking, what theme are you using and what linux distro is this, i love this theme; thanx
ОтветитьHow to achieve this great blur effect in alacritty?
ОтветитьAmateur use alacritty, pro use Wezterm.
ОтветитьHi thanks for your video, can I use Alacritty as a serial terminal, I want a terminal that I can easily switch to emulate a VT100 for a Z80 serial input over RS323
ОтветитьAlacritty is okay. But foot is better
ОтветитьWell for me all the emulators are same. I use urxvt. All I need is to enter the 🐚. All do the same for me.
ОтветитьWezTerm is much better than Alacritty, both design and implementation.
ОтветитьHow about kitty ?
ОтветитьI’ve found Alacritty very useful for my retro-computing addiction. Setting it up (key sequences mainly) to emulate an NCD X terminal to connect to a simulated CDC Cyber mainframe was so much easier than with Xterm (maybe a low bar, admittedly). Also easier than iTerm2 I found. The “live” configuration file is a big plus. Maybe I should look at Kitty or some others people here like, but I’m happy with Alacritty so far. It is also cross platform, which is another big plus (I don’t have Windows machines, but it seems stable on both macOS and Linux).
ОтветитьI really like Alacritty but I don't understand why they don't include Linux binaries, forcing you to install Rust in order to compile.
ОтветитьYessir, somehow it makes me love my computer more. 😅
ОтветитьI want a terminal with auto complete for program parameters ...
🤞😶
No hard feelings but, I tried Alacritty first it was a "not so fun experience"
I use terminal as my primary text editor with more than 8+ daily, tried Kitty it was awesome it has support for ligatures, plugins, extensions, tabs, windows etc and never had to look for another terminal emulator.
hey matt can you make a step by step video on how you did your polybar and i3wm configuration, it seems fantastic !
Ответитьurxvt still wins. it has everything, can be scripted with perl, takes 75% fewer resources (memory and cpu usage) for entire urxvtd (daemon) and all urxvtc's (clients) than just one alacritty instance, and it spawns faster. the only concession is fonts aren't ideal, but I just use DejaVu Sans Mono and don't expect crazy unicode characters to work all the time.
ОтветитьMaybe I’m linuxing wrong. What are the benefits of switching terminals?
Ответитьurxvt just works
ОтветитьI guess people who have coded in python would like YAML format, because you need to be consistent with spacing even there as well. In any case, I feel YAML is more readable than JSON or XML or even .properties formats.
ОтветитьGreat video. I was using alacritty for quite a while. I recently switched to kitty. I think I will stick with kitty for the time being. I still use alacritty for certain tasks.
Ответитьbig problem i have is that idunno how to copy/paste shit and its annoying me
ОтветитьKitty is superior
ОтветитьControversy is the name of the game xD
ОтветитьThe beauty of yaml is that you can't write it like crap.
ОтветитьAlacritty can't ever support ligatures (without major rewrites) because of how they parse text to be displayed. Which I think is a little sad.
Ответить👍👍
ОтветитьI would love a video about Kitty and some of the most popular kittens. Thanks for your work, btw.
ОтветитьExcellent presentation and summation as per usual.Thanks.
ОтветитьGiven your history with DWM and the suckless team, kinda surprised you did not give ST a try.
Ответитьst gang here
Ответитьidk man wezterm exists so kinda crushes alacritty
ОтветитьAlacrity works well on mac but I have never been able to fix the fonts on linux. Each character on a given line does not have enough horizontal spacing. They are all slightly overlapping which makes it extremely difficult to read. Does anyone else have this issue and manage to resolve it? I am currently still using termite but may make the switch if I can get fonts to render properly
ОтветитьI used alacrity for a long time, then I found kitty and life got a little better. I like alacrity but kitty is better in my personal opinion.
ОтветитьI used Alacritty, but now switched to Kitty. Kitty has some functionalities that I missed in Alacritty and was the reason I looked around and found Kitty.
Edit: I prefer having the documentation in the config file. And Kitty excels there. It's fantastic. If you don't want documentation in config, then just use a command to remove comments from the file.
Angry Kitty Noises
ОтветитьI try and try but I still prefer the speed of suckless terminal, it works best in my 12 years old notebook.
Ответитьwezterm tho, and whenever it leaves beta: 'contour' maybe
ОтветитьAlacrity doesn’t support ligatures.
ОтветитьI'm yet to use Alacrity and this video told me nothing about it. Except that is "The BEST Terminal Emulator. Period.". Easy theme changing? I just changed theme in Terminator with just right click. xfce needed 2 more clicks inside 'preferences'. Critical info here.
ОтветитьIt doesn't even have a scrollbar! The issue for adding one has been open for 5 years.
ОтветитьAlacritty is a decent terminal, but it doesn't have many features and it's relative heavy. I stayed with st for TUI programs and wezterm for real work. Wezterm is easy to hack, they have great documentation and Devs- one I got very fast one feature that I needed. Unfortunately they sometimes brake configuration.
ОтветитьHow does kitty compare to Alacritty ?
ОтветитьGet dylan araps (black belt ricer, pywall and distro creator) tool "paleta". It lets you change terminal color scheme on the fly in all open terminals. You can also redirect the output of paleta to a file, And then "cat" that file to apply a theme in the current terminal. It is very fast and works with ALL terminal emulators. One thing I found annoying with alacritty was that even if it have a way to start it in a server/client mode (you save a lot of RAM doing that), it meant that i had to have the same font in all terminals, because the config is connected like it is. That is the reason i didn't include alacritty in i3term.
Ответитьhey Matt what fetch tool is that I like the color dots on it
ОтветитьDo you ever imagine you'll start other channels like a gaming channel, audiophile/music channel, etc? Would love to know your perspective on your other interests!
