WAP 7 was developed CLW from WAG 9 by altering the gear ratio and changing the software in WAG 9 computers. Then the star locomotive WAP 5 was not able to pull 24 coach train in a satisfactory manner. It was losing time even compared to WAP 4.
Initially WAP 7 was to be scrapped due to great difficulties in altering the software. But luckily things worked out and the rest is history. By the way DLW and DCW started making electric locomotives very late. Even today the leader is CLW. Now the 9000 HP version of WAG 9 called WAG 9HH is out. Which is also known as Navutkarsh. Siemens is modifying it and will manufacture it in Gujrat.
To the best of my knowledge 9000hp WAP7 will be seen soon.

Correction *CLW is Chittaranjan locomotive works situated in Chittaranjan West Bengal, Wap 7 mostly manufacturer in BLW Banaras Locomotive Works Varanasi.

Igbt, rapid acceleration, hog tech and low manufacturing operational and maintenance cost are main reason for p7 success, especially after announcement of ICF coach production stop and replacement of lhb coaches, p7 had hog tech which accelerated p7 production

Actually after 2018 clw concentrated on wag9 while dlw ( now known as blw ) mass produced wap7, but this year railways has decided to manufacture around 700wag9 while only 50-60 wap7 and 3or4 wap 5, wag9 now been used a lot in passenger trains as till 100kmph it can pull passenger trains which is far lighter than goods train with good acceleration, and in newly electrified section where power plant power scarcity is there they use wag9 as it doesn't have hog facility
