This is great. I just ordered my set of Rokinon DS lenses.
What camera did you shoot this test on?
Hello Bryan, I really enjoyed your channel. looking forward to more videos. So if you are just an amateur photographer then good way to start is to buy Rokinon. I am Looking to invest in a camera iI have always used Sony and confused between Sony FX6 vs canon C200. Any advise will be appreciated.
ОтветитьGreat video! Thanks for sharing. Have you seen the new DSX version of these Rokinon cine lenses? Do you know if the image quality and performance of the new ones are better than the older DS version?
Ответитьawesome presentation. I purchased the Rokinon Lens Kit
ОтветитьThe rokinon's bokeh balls are very dirty.
Ответитьdam 10x the price for a 2 percent difference
ОтветитьI prefer the look of The canon
Ответитьwhich is the advantage of a 114mm focus ring in the Canon CN-E?
ОтветитьWow...
ОтветитьThank you for the test! But I wonder 1) how about breathing when changing focus, 2) how are the flares? 3) how do they behave when closed at T16, for example?
ОтветитьThen you get a flare with the Rokinon lenses and everything will magically look magenta ahahah.
Great comparison Ryan!
Awesome content I was reallly looking into XEEN for lenses with RF mount but that CINE DS looks just right!
Man thanks for the inspiration you bring I created a power solution video for my R5 and gave you a shout out! keep those good videos coming! :D
well done Rokinon
ОтветитьVideo lens review in a non video environment. Focal breathing is far far more important on the cine lens than microscopical pixel peeping of the lens. Ghosting and flare control even more important. Nothing is covered what’s important for a filmmaker.
ОтветитьI love your content man, I'm so glad I found your channel a few months ago. You always seem to make videos about the exact things I have questions about
Ответитьhi there, have you compared the DSX rokinons vs the cine meikes?? (all MFT)
Ответитьor even the Meikes vs the cn-e cannons??
ОтветитьReally like the Rokinons for the price you can get a set for. Between your comparisons and Film Jams channel you've helped inform my decisions this black friday season!
ОтветитьBro! Thanks for this video and for representing the hearing impaired. Many blessings!
ОтветитьMy thought process was ..... get the Rokinon kit, if one breaks that means it's probably been used more than the other lenses and it's time to upgrade to a sturdier build. It's a great way to figure out your shooting style and the clients expectations with respect to that style.
ОтветитьHey are you shooting this on your R5 with an adaptor? I'd be interesting to see what this looks like on a cine camera like a C500 M2 or any other EF mount camera for that matter, just to see what difference the body makes.
ОтветитьThanks for the comparison, however we know that the big difference between a good and expensive lens and a cheap one is in the breath, in fact especially on the 35mm the Rokinon is a 35mm with infinity focus, but at the minimum focus distance it becomes a 40 / 45mm, changes angle of view as focus distance changes
For greater precision there are also no tests for backlight flare
In any case, Rokinon lenses are a good compromise between quality and cost, as well as using vintage lenses such as nikon ai-s or Leica R, Minolta MD etc ..
can i use this lens on a blackmagie pocket cinema 4k? and also with a speedbooster? Thanks
ОтветитьFor the "Rokinon Cine DS" Lenses would you need a follow focus for them? if so what would be a good one to look into?
ОтветитьI wonder why there are so many comments saying this video ist great? 1. All “cinema” T1.5 primes under 10 grand are rehoused photolenses. That’s a fact. (XEENs = Samyang, CN-E = L Series, Sigma Cine = Art Series) The Canons are starting to show their age as they are just the L Series Primes in a stupidly big housing (by todays standard). The PL mount is another selling argument. Canon ignored the mass of customers asking for a proper Cinema Mount (NO, EF is not a proper Cinema Mount, especially those without a tightening ring) 2. Pixelpeeping seems to be a photographer thing to do. When we preped shoots at panavision I’ve never seen a DP pixel peep. What matters is the feel, color reproduction (although can be corrected in post) and breathing characteristics. 3. The comparison is just pointless. A better one would have been XEENs vs CN-Es or Rokinon vs Canon L series. The optics comparison is just comparing photolenses, NOT cinema lenses.
ОтветитьSuprised the Rokinon 85mm has no color refraction (Or very little) the Canon you see a ton of Color Refraction in the Bokeh on it. I would chose the Rokinon in 85mm over the Canon personally based on this, but I'm sure there's better focus pulling, and aperture adjustments on the Canon lens.
ОтветитьThanks for your very informative video. What I see is 1) the Rokinon has onion rings in the boke. 2) The Rokinon has better corner sharpness. 3) the Rokinon has less chromatic aberrations. 4) The canon has the edge on cleaner contrast. As far as I am concerned it's a no brainer, the Rokinon is the winner regardless of price. SO!!!!.... save the money and put it into more equipment or an upgrade in camera.
ОтветитьSo these were the DS lenses, not the DSX? Apparently the football bokeh was fixed on the DSX. I'm renting a set in a couple weeks for my BMPCC 6K, to see what's what.
Thanks for the comparison....that's solid info.
: OUTSTANDING info commentary :

For a $3700 difference the Rokinon holds up pretty dang good. I would say rent the Canon Cine Lenses for each project.
ОтветитьFor a $3,500 savings... Rokinon wins in the price category for me.
ОтветитьAs you demonstrate in this video, the cheap Rokinon lenses hold up better than most people would have you believe. I agree with other commenters that the test should include focus breathing and flaring, but also understand that not everyone does rack focusing, nor shoot without a matte box to combat flares. One hallmark of the more expensive cine lenses is durability and consistency of color and contrast. Rokinons deviate in color and contrast, and their plastic build won't stand the test of time if abused.
Lenses to cinematographers are much like microphones are to recording engineers. They all have inherent characteristics that are subjective, yet can be employed for creative effect.
As someone who works on many low budget projects that don't have a budget to rent "proper" cinema lenses, I invested in a full set of Rokinon lenses. To date, no one has every complained, much less noticed, that I'm not using Cooke or Zeiss or....insert name of expensive glass. Sure, I'd love to work with better lenses, but until then the Rokinons have served me well. That said, I am saving up for a set of DZOfilm Vespid primes, as they are a more durable build, and have a character I prefer over the Rokinons.
We live in a great time to invest in affordable filmmaking gear. Life is pretty dang good.
Was the Rokinon the version 1 or 2?
ОтветитьThanks for this comparison! I'm nowhere near the point of springing for Canon lenses at this point, but it sure helps me to see that the Rokinon holds its own, especially for the more gritty industrial work that I'm doing.
Ответитьexcellent analysis, I have all the samyang lenses from this video
ОтветитьI'm sure Canon reached out and encouraged you to retake some of the VO segments as many were quite embarrassing for them. Great review nonetheless, but it feels like you softened your words a bit regardign the champ of prime glass.
ОтветитьNice comparison! Thank you. One question, is the lens Rokinon cine ds UMC1, or UMC2?
ОтветитьThe Rokinons look nice but that bokeh eh...
Ответитьcn-e 는 최대개방에서 색수차가 꽤 많네요.
ОтветитьThx a lot man! Im using Samyang (Rokinon 35 and 14mm) and its my favorite lenses. So cheap and good! In this comparison im most like the Rokinon style of picture! Its amazing lol, so big difference in price and so low in quality!
Ответить350$ dirt cheap.... mmmm.. I have cameras that cost less than that pretty much complete, used - but still.. You'd get a LOT of dirt for $350 so the expression doesn't work very well here. It's a qualified comparison, which means that it's not relative to "within lenses" but to actual dirt. I'm not a native English speaker, so I'd have a justification, you don't.
ОтветитьGracias
ОтветитьGreat stuff! The comparisons are really helpful: especially how you presented so much detail 📽🎞🎬
ОтветитьGrandioso video, saludos desde Guatemala!!
ОтветитьI have a set 14 24 35 50 85 100 135mm I would love to get the 10mm ❤❤❤
ОтветитьThanks for this video, I was really looking around for affordable cinema lenses for my Black magic 6k pro. I’m very impressed with the quality I can get from these rokinon lenses 😀🙌🏼
ОтветитьAm I crazy to think the Rokinon micro contrast is better?
ОтветитьAmazing how well the Rokinon holds up against such an overpriced canon cine lens.
ОтветитьYou're gonna drop that thing.
