There's this thing Dr Brown does: He constantly compares the normative ideal version of Islam to the worse reality of non-Muslim (i.e. Western) countries. For instance, he contrasts the most idealistic interpretation of Muslim law to the imperfect reality of Western countries, all the while eliding both the normative ideal of Western law as well as the reality of VAW in Muslim countries. It's really annoying, not to mention intellectually dishonest.

Whitewashing Islam, and religion in general doesn't convince me. Categories like "dishonor", "infidelity" - no matter whether imported or originated in Islam - are no longer issues today. Denying that violence against women exists in muslim countries is a hypocrisy. It doesn't get better by trying to prove that elsewhere things are even worse. It is not very credible for a muslim to research his own religion. An atheist is in a much better position to carry out this kind of research. He is not going to say that Islam was violent from its conception and that Mohammed often operated as a ruthless warlord, with a sword named the vertebrae cleaver. In my country, the Netherlands, there are many instances of 'honour killing' in which the real reason wasn't dating a non believer, or just dating someone for that matter, but because the family ruled her an apostate. Which is a ground for killing someone.

This argument just doesn’t hold up anymore. It’s the idea of moral relativism. That a guy that punches someone in the face is just as bad as someone that punches them in the face because God told them to. But imagine if there were 70 times more people that were punching people in the face because God told him to. That’s the issue of comparing terrorism with a couple random white guy killings.

Islamic apologist have started to use other arguments. This is definitely an older line of argument.

Have you ever come across a verse in the Quran which says:"whomsoever kills a human being or commits corruption(any tipe of corruption) is like killing all humanity together. You see how dangerous it is to commit a murder, one murder. This is the essence of Islamic Shariaa:to protect and not to destroy.
