I wonder how some of the other, still common browsers fare like Opera, and then some other junk browsers which are known to be unsafe because they're built on outdated browsers or are just malicious like Yandex, Baidu, etc. Safari would've been an interesting test had Apple still done a Windows version. It's also bad for the web how many browsers are now just forks of Chromium. Firefox also has that warning of "This file is not commonly downloaded"

You should add the Brave and Tor browsers and you should include EEF's Cover Your Tracks test.

i remember a while ago i tried a tool called beef which host a website with ssl certificate, this website contains malicious js code and then it take over your browser and can see almost everything and had a lot of tool. anyway i remember chrome and firefox blocked the website immediately but ms Edge didnt identify this website as a threat and the malicious software worked (dont worry i tested it on vm)

1 Antivirus software has something to say about the whole thing.
2 Firefox has addons against malware, while Chrome and Edge make money with your private information and want to prevent anti-malware addons.
3 The whole thing seems to be sponsored nonsense because he deliberately avoids going into depth.
4 He accepts these pointless ratings even though he can see that it's just a warning and not a block.
5 Don't trust anyone on the internet without seeing their resume and bank account.

With edge, it isn't necessarily perfect at detecting malware as your test concludes. It blocked every executable file that it didn't detect as malicious simply because it was an executable. I think for all of the browsers, it'd be worth going through all of the downloads that have a warning of anything except than "this file is dangerous" and accepting it to be downloaded, before scanning for successful downloads. This would be more fair for Chrome and Firefox in your results, and would also more accurately represent how they behave with malware scanning.

Yeah, chrome and edge just warned about any exe or bat by default. Its a good default. But it's not detection of malware. Its just crying wolf at any potential.

Its funny, edge blocks the most malware, but I also find it to be the worst offender of Microsoft security scam popups.

As you said, this just used public blacklists so it only says which browsers blacklists are being updated more frequently, this test makes no sense.

If it blocks it from being downloaded, even if you have the option to override, it did get detected and blocked by the browser, I feel it is fine to include it in the block rate calculation.

would it be more secure to run a browser in a container to limit any potential damage? or would that remove the AV protection you would otherwise have on your machine?

Not surprised firefox for worse. For years they were insanely vunerable to 'takeover' ads where they'd use infinite modal popups to lock the entire browser, while Chrome made them trivial to avoid. If they can't even roll out a patch for that kind of issue, I've no faith in the more difficult to solve issues.
