How to Tune the Piano 2021 - Tools & Tuning - DIY!

Hej Mattias och tack för god instruktion!
Jag undrar över själva stämningstekniken - om strängen i frekvens sett skall stämmas nedifrån och upp (och aldrig gå över pitch) såsom på en gitarr? För att inte riskera att dra strängen för hårt, så att den går av. Eller tvärtom, uppifrån och ned? För att lätta på den spänning som annars initialt råder, som gör att strängen slackar efter ett tag. Om det nu har betydelse öht...? Skall nu ge mig på att stämma mitt Yamaha konsertpiano och är noga med att det blir rätt från början. Hoppas att Du kan vägleda mig i ämnet.

One thing you have to be careful of is inharmonicity. Piano strings don't produce a tone with a 100% clear pitch, so conventional tuner apps won't necessarily give you an exact indication of where each overtone is. Depends on how perfect you want it

Ok you tuned it by adding one string at a time, what about tuning each individual string, is that just more work

Thank you very much. Tuning was the main reason I stayed away from acoustic pianos, I'm reconsidering it now thanks to your tutorial.

There are many things that are not done correctly in this video, it’s teaching people some bad habits.
First, don’t touch the strings with your bare hands. Ever. Period.
Second, use the felt strap to mute all other strings apart from the one you’re tuning, to avoid the harmonics giving you an incorrect read on your tuner. You can see on the first string he tunes that the tune starts sliding, that’s because the harmonics are kicking in and messing the read of the tuner.
Third, those clamps he said are useless at the start are the actual things you need to use to mute the adjacent strings to the one you’re tuning, not the felt strap. As I said, the felt strap is for muting all the other strings.
Fourth: no plants on top of your piano, please.
I’m sure there’s more, but that’s all I have time for now. Please do a proper video to replace this one.

Great Video. Very well explained. Just a quick question. It looks like you used very few tools compared to those included as a link in the description (from Amazon). Could I buy a cheaper set with just the red temperament strip, wedge mutes and tuning hammer and still do the job well?

So many cheapskates think they are tuners now😂 learning from a guy using fucking ipad string tuner and doesn't even know how to use tuning hammer properly. Yes tuning principle is simple like any other, but like everything it's complicated because it's not about principles

I have never done this. I let always do tune my piano by the guy who build it. But he died and either I am looking for another person or I'll try it myselfe.

I got an old Piano from the 30's in questionable shape at a thrift store and want to try and make it usable myself. This helps a lot!

Seems like you can tune a piano, but can you tuna fish? 😏🤠

For the keys that have 2 and 3 strings does each string have to be tuned to the same note?Like if it’s a high c would all 3 strings be c?

Nicely done! Clear and easy to follow. I always have a struggle with tuning the high treble notes, even with a tuning device. If you could demonstrate how you do this, perhaps in a future video, that would be really helpful. Thanks!

Instead of the felt strip, I use a pair of rubber stick mutes to mute off the outside strings.
