i so wish i had someone growing up to get me involved and learning like you're doing with your kids. my dad never taught me a thing and had me in the shop exclusively for manual labor or as a third arm.

why not shaft and eccentric gear on the end? could use the engine as a counterweight

i think the welding process warps the part, due to heat. That's why machining should be done last

You have a beautiful family. I love seeing a man teach his children the way you do. Before institutional education, that is the way it used to be. Your children Will do well in life because of the type of parents you and your wife are.

Awesome vid, super interesting. Sorry about the motors - but mistakes happen, and that's how we learn, right?

Hi Jeremy and fans. I’m looking for a material pre feeder. However, my
thought is to see if you can point me to a simple motor variable speed design that could be used.

In short, I have a spool of bungee cord that is cut to size via a strip cutter. However, to work properly, I have to manually feed the roll to avoid tension. Tension causes irregular cuts.

Hi listen bud i love your content and all that you have helped me understand as far as what i was looking for. Very good content but as much as i understand you and what your talking about its like way over my head. Im like beginner beginner on electronics and basicaly looking for stuff to be made from recycled materials not from treadmills and propelled wheel chairs but things you can actually get your hands on fix and then use. No one throughs away stuff that works in my country. Just saying love your information nin the less. Ps. I dont even have a computer to runn a 3d printing machine 😂😂😅😅😆😆

I'm no engineer, but I sure wish the people that designed those motor electronics saw this video before taking it to be manufactured !!!!!!!!! I'm not an electrical engineer either but I have heard of a fuse. Your efforts to go beyond will be rewarded, BEYOND your expectation. For sure ! I love that you make your family, the motivation ! None better !

Could you couple the belt tensioner to an assembly that stops the arm in place when there's no tension being applied in a belt snapping scenario.

There are plenty of robotics engineers that don’t think about these kind of things when designing or programming robots. This is a great series, and you can go on forever with improvements!

borrow nail varnish for color coding tabs. the color tape is so good for that. sticky tape, magic marker, triangle warning signs. If you borrowed nail varnish to color the leads and the box, that is very durable and useful for color signals and marking metals.

we learn from these failures that's the way of electronics engineering. i was designing a pcb that had some expensive op amps and adcs that the front ends if feed more than 5v would blow them up well after i had received the prototypes i had applied 12v to the front ends by mixing up connectors now if i can implement a protection feature i do but not over do it lol

I love when a maker doesn't hide the mistakes they make. When you are experimenting, and creating, you are going to make mistakes and have failures. This is a normal part of the creative process. It's SO important for students to see a really smart and talented person fail in such a simple and humble way. And yes, it's frustrating, disappointing, and maybe even embarrassing at the time, but again, THIS IS NORMAL. I, in fact, just fried a stepper motor driver because I hooked up the power supply backwards. DOH! How did I do such a stupid thing!?! Probably was thinking about my next step, and not fully concentrating on the current step. And I was excited (in a rush) to get this new larger stepper up and running. I need to adopt the "measure twice, cut once" philosophy to my wiring. Check twice, then turn on power. BTW, you've got a cool shop with lots of cool tools. Maybe someday I'll have some of that.

IMO there is no room for arts in STEM, Science Technology Engineering and Math are core to society. The arts are fine and all, but we need more engineers and scientists, not artists, and we need people to specialize, not generalize.

For the issue about the belt snapping and then the whole forearm falling, how about building in a safety similar to whats in an elevator. Make a little arm that can swing around inside with a couple teeth that can engage the gear and lock it in place. Then arrange it so the arm is spring loaded and wants to fly towards your gear and lock it up, but as long as there's tension on your belt, the locking arm is held back enough that it doesn't interfere with the gear.

You could also use a mechanism like "fall arresters" for people and equipment. They work a lot like a seatbelt. When used at normal operating speeds, they allow themselves to rotate freely. When something tries to rotate them very quickly like a car crash or a worker starting to free fall off a roof, the mechanism locks itself up.

Warping can occur in your parts from the high heat from the welder. This is why you want to do your welding first if possible so you can then do your precise machining afterwards.

Thanks for sharing the stupid. Anyone who's built anything even remotely complex has done this, I'm sure. I have absolutely blown up every component at least once. Just finding one perfect connector is a headache. Making each connector different makes sense in the design phase but becomes a nightmare when you build. In this situation, I'd swap the genders of the 24v line, color code and numerically code. Definitely always take a breather when you feel like punching something; it's obvious, but easy to forget. Keep up the great work.
