I agree that most of the riders dragons scale armors look bad. Hiccup's is fine, and Astrid's is the best, being both the most practical and nice to look at. Also, Hiccup and Astrid's casual outfits are both great. I also agree that Grimmel isn't very good. Viggo Grimborn from the httyd Race to the Edge netflix show is what Grimmel claims to be, a dark version of Hiccup, an intelligent villain and a villain that has lasting actions that fit with the themes of the first 2 movies. All the riders are also much more fleshed out in race to the edge like the twins have a frightening amount of random knowledge, tuffnut speaks some spanish, the boar pit, ect.. Watching race to the edge was where I first noticed Toothless's dull dark blue stripes and spots, which are a great accent to his dark blue gray black color scheme.

I would honestly wonder how many more HTTYD movies they could make before they started tarnishing the brand if they didn't end it at the third film. There is however, a second chance to fix what people didn't like about the hidden world, but in a way that everyone including me wouldn't be happy about, and that is the live action. If the live action is successful enough, then mabye they might go ahead and change it to where half of the events in hidden world appear in the last one,and the other half stays. Personally, I don't really like this idea, but they already said they aren't making another animated httyd sequel with the same characters. Mabye the live action will be a little bit more based off the books, but eho will know until it comes out.

It took me 5 years to watch httyd 3 and I can't disagree more with this as i think this film is a great conclusion and everything makes sense except for one scene. I would undoubtably rate 3 over 2 as it creates a villain so powerful that made Hiccup realise that people aren't going to change and they will always view the dragons as beasts. But I guess agree to disagree.

I feel like the shar coment is more so that fans would not confuse the actual markings with the skars. Also the more femenine desig might just be so that it's easier for kids to spott the difference because it's a main dragon character and will play am mager part in the movie. The nadders that did the mating dance in the stables did not have the problem because they were chowne for like 5 second and then never mentioned.

Do you know what a better movie would’ve been? Valka and hiccup go explore to try to find the hidden world and find the last night furries. In the second movie valka literally says she and hiccup can find “every last species”. Together… also valka is seriously an interesting character however in the third movie she does absolutely nothing. In my version of the story valka , Astrid and hiccup set out to find a night furry because someone in the village reported that they spotted one flying. Once they find the hidden world they discover a small group of night furries that have been hiding there for decades. Toothless meets a female night furry and etc… everything else happens

In nature female animals behave differently and look differently, they're fake animals so its whatever but its clear the light and night fury are supposed to mirror alot of human behavior and intelligence, They are significantly different from the rest of the dragons since their main characters thus the sexual dimorphism, They get special treatment.

How to train your dragon has a bunch of strong women so I don't see anything wrong with one feminine character, Don't you guys always harp on representation? Not every character needs to be rough and tuff not every dragon needs to be a monster.

always hated the trope of main male character is the butt of the joke and gets constantly put down/humiliated every second he gets
and then is seen as in the wrong or unreasonable when he gets upset for being treated like trash(I know it’s a popular trope but I’m getting sick of it it wasn’t funny the first time and it still wasn’t funny the other 9000 times)

Ohh the Light Fury. I have a complicated relationship with my feelings towards her character and design. For the longest time I was convinced she was an albino Night Fury - a miracle that she survived to adulthood being a completely white nocturnal predator. Lol

I honestly think the heart spots are leftover from an older model and the animators picked the wrong hue/shade of white to recolor them to in order to get rid of them when someone else was probably (rightfully) like “Those heart spots are stupid, get rid of them.”. And sexual dimorphism in the Furies but not existing in the Deadly Natter isn’t necessarily a problem imo. If we look at cats for example: Lions are the only species of cat that have sexual dimorphism.

I actually thought that for a completely wild dragon, the Light Fury was fairly expressive. Toothless has been essentially domesticated by Hiccup for almost 10 years now and has learned how to communicate with facial expressions with Hiccup which is an essential difference between them. I think especially in the “beach date” sequence she’s very expressive with her confusion and disdain towards Toothless’ utter cluelessness lol. I’ll never forget how Toothless starts doing this weird dance and she starts batting him in the face like “STAHP!” And then huffs and hangs upside down in a tree, glaring at Toothless when he tries calling out to her lol. I just imagine her thoughts being “Gawd the first compatible male I’ve seen in ages and he’s an IDIOT! Why me!!!” lol.

And it makes sense that the Light Fury is essentially a stranger to us - the audience. We’re more connected to Hiccup as the perspective character and only 1 time do we see Toothless interact with his new girlfriend without Hiccup. This is to highlight how this movie isn’t about Toothless or even about his new romance. It’s about Hiccup learning to do what’s best for Toothless by letting go.

Hmmm. The Toothless design changes don’t bother me personally. I can see what you’re saying but we are talking about an adolescent dragon growing and maturing into an adult dragon. Lol I do agree about the “King of Dragons” thing. I get amusement out of watching the Hidden World sequence because in the crowd of dragons there’s a Bewilderbeast with a broken tusk - just like the one that Toothless defeated in the 2nd movie. I like imagining that that Bewilderbeast had been ruling things between films and then Toothless shows up and the Bewilderbeast is like “Oh man. You again? Fine fine. I’ll let you lead.” And the other dragons there were like “Huh I guess this Night Fury fella is in charge now.” It amuses me greatly lol.

Lol. Maybe it’s just the fact I have dogs of my own but I absolutely adore the fact that Toothless is playing with Hiccup’s leg prosthetic. It implies that in the past they’ve played together using it and it just brings a smile to my face. It’s also another thing that indicates just how domesticated Toothless is at this point. He’s been with humans for so long that most of his initial instincts from the first movie have been worn down. It doesn’t bother me but I can understand that it bothers you.

Anyway, sorry if this comes off as if I’m being dismissive. Your dislike of the film is valid, just sharing my thoughts lol

Most people talking about complaints, but before I mention mine, I have to say, this video's really well made considering your setup. The little black lizard avatar is just so derpy and cute, captures your expressions perfectly, and I really like it for that. This is a pretty great video, both well made and valid in all points.

But here's a complaint you should've mentioned: most people complain that the Light Fury doesn't get much screentime, but very few notice how the Hidden World, the thing the movie is named after, gets even less. If I remember correctly, it was on screen for five minutes AT MAXIMUM. What??? Isn't that the main part of the movie??? Why the movie is named after it??? Seriously, it should've been an actual main setting for the movie. Maybe a Hidden World of Night Furies or something.

I've read the books. They were not meant to be separated forever. It was only until the dragon felt like humans had grown up enough that they could coexist. Nor did the dragons leave immediately. This mass exodus happened over Hiccups life. Toothless never left Hiccup. Hiccup states that Toothless will leave soon because HE is dying and will die soon.

i feel this could have been a 2 part movie

part1 could fleshout grimmel as a nightfury killer but also a manipulator trying to preach beliefs that dragons and humans must be seperate in his own way the true opposite to hiccup and this back and forth with them in the movie which ends with grimmel defeat but berk divided in a civil war kind of thing and toothless and hiccup juggle unifying berk and the lightfury romance.

part 2 is a rimeskip and could fleshout the divide grimmel left and this causes the northern alliance (the main baddies) to get their deagon army via the divided berkians and their own trapping methods as hiccup tries to unify berk and toothless with his duties as the alpha and now father of the nightlights. later the northern alliance and berk defectors do a final attack on berk (and the part to include rtte characters like dagur, mala, heather and wingmaidens) but the directors drago sacrafice comes into play and that sways the heart of some of the berk defectors and fighing ensues with the northern alliance vs all the allies hiccup got over the years in a final battle

it ends with lots of casualties and the northern alliance defeated but thats when hiccup realises that humans must breakaway from dragons for their own safety and for the sake of toothless. (this was also an excuse for fishlegs to marry heather snotlout marries minden causs ruffnut isnt worth it for those 2).

rhe hidden world has the same theme as pokemon black and white its conclusion was right thing to do but the execution was poorly done

thanks for reading.

I agree and disagree with some points in this video, but it's very well made.
I dont know if you have, but PLEASE watch race to the edge. It gives a lot of context to the second film (it is a prequel) and gives loads of character building to the riders (especially the twins). It also has a couple of examples of other viking civilisations that coexist with the dragons, like the defenders of the wing. It also shows a bunch of examples of villain redemption with 2 of the 4 main villains actually befriending dragons by the end. Basically just the exact opposite of the 3rd film.

I was like you honestly. I thought I liked this movie. But I couldnt really think of why I liked it other than "It has stunning shots" or "Oh I liked the action scenes". One of the first things that stuck out to me was the dumb-downed characters. Especially Toothless. In the first two films hes calm, cunning, cautious, ready to lay his life down to protect Hiccup, but he still has his playful side of course. Thing is, in HTTYD 3, we pretty much only see his playful side. He acts much more like an overstimulated puppy dog than the cool cat-like personality he had before. Dude, Toothless was an adolescent in the first film (or at the very least a very young adult) yet in the third movie, the one where he's several years older, he acts much more like how I would expect a juvenile to behave. Again, Toothless in the first two films had his silly moments, but they were never his entire character. But in the third film, you mean to tell that the ALPHA, basically the equivalent of CHIEF OF THE DRAGONS, the "Unholy offspring of LIGHTNING and DEATH ITSELF" is a horny puppy dog who only seems to frolick around in the woods with his lady for days at a time. Its a bit ironic how in the second movie, Hiccup's growth is one of maturity. To step up to a leadership role and to take responsibility. Toothless is not really a respectable alpha. I'm not saying he cant have a goofy side to him, but thats all he is when hes supposed to be a leader himself.

There's also the point with Toothless's combat. Take all the final battles of the movies (Red Death, Bewilderbeest and... Grimmel?) Which one is the most "Toothless"? In my eyes its easily the Red Death battle. Toothless was an assassin. He was calculating, elusive, and "never misses". Hiccup and Toothless used all of these strengths to their advantage against the Red Death. Sure, in a head to head brawl Toothless wouldve been cooked. But Hiccup and Toothless forced the Red Death to come to an environment where Toothless had the advantage: High up in the sky with thick, dark clouds where he could hide and strike from any direction at a moment's notice. Vs the Bewildebeest, Toothless just kinds of smacks it in the face from up front repeatedtly, and most of the other dragons ended up doing a lot of the work anyway. Its not an awful final battle, but kind of boring. It doesnt feel like a "Night fury" battle where Toothless uses his agility to his advantage. And against Grimmel... Toothless doesnt really do much. He gets tranquilized, captured, forced in a stalemate, and yeah he uses his new pokemon move Discharge to vaporize some dragons, but thats like his only moment. His flying looks uncoordinated, he rarely uses his plasma blasts against Grimmel (and one of the few times he does, he ends up hitting the Light Fury, who seems to just shrug it off with no sign of injury on the place where she was hit), he seems to hold back at many moments (like, you can't tell me that Toothless wouldnt have attacked the Light Fury or at least viewed her as an enemy immediately after the multiple times she attempts to attack Hiccup). His plasma blasts were feared in the first movie. They struck like lightning, and actually looked like they caused real destruction. In the third film, they just feel nerfed. And even if you somehow think they weren't nerfed, Toothless ends up using them very rarely anyways, even in moments of actual conflict. Another thing is that Toothless seems to love to take the direct approach to a fight rather than be sneaky and assassin-like style he had in the first film. Do we ever really get a "GET DOWN-" moment in the second or especially the third film? Because I really dont think we do.

The Light Fury... I mean look I dont really dislike her design (go ahead shoot me) but I always felt that something was off about her design. And its mainly that she doesnt fit in with the artstyle of the rest of the dragons.

As a fan of the two firsts movies (especially the first), I just wanted to say THANK YOU for this wonderful analyze! I first watched HTTYD when I was, like, 6, and I had approximatively the evolution as you with the third film: liking it first, because it HAD to be good and I HAD to love it, to starting to see problems, and now I'm so disgusted. It seems that not so much people (at least from what I saw) say how much everything in the movie is terrible, and I started to think that one day or another I had to write an essay/video on it to explain clearly my point of view, but you done it way better that I would have! I noticed a big part of what you had talk about, but you added a lot of interesting thoughts and details (the quotes from the art book make me want to kill someone it's so terrible). I noticed that Toothless in the third act stupid in front of the Light Fury, but with your video I notices that he act stupid ALL the movie. We literally went from a human mind in the corps of a majestic dragon to the mind of a horny dog in a plastic toy corps, just wow. I also didn't remember the comedy being THIS bad. Anyway, your video is pure gold, and your drawings also seems wonderful, so I'll look forward to your futur videos! Have a great day!

I would say that toothless being awkward in the last movie makes a lot of sense, he is meant to contrast with the wild light fury, showing he has lost a lot of the finesse he had when he was a wild dragon, and also shows he doesn’t belong on the ground and emphasises the hindrance that missing a tail fin has on him

One of course I'm slightly blinded by nostalgia, It is So true. I left HTTYD 3 in the first screenings locally feeling like something was off, I've heard things before but I don't think any of them hit me as hard as this. This, Was perfect.

It respected the franchise but, Pointed out very, VERY true flaws across all of it. This is my favourite franchise, My nostalgia piece a piece of my childhood that will always be there. But this video respects the franchise whilst pointing out all the glory and all the terrible things.

This is once again just perfect.
