How do you analyse these games? Do you make notes and write things down as you progress? I catch myself forgetting a lot when playing to hit a 100%

one thing to add is that sidekicks tend to have a lot of dialogue in specific DLCs, often more than the actual companions

New player here, and I gotta say I'm super impressed with the ambition this game exudes. Plus, I really love the inclusion of Vox Machina characters from Critical Role!

2 years later I finally listend to you enough to get this game and watch your video because of steam summer sale. And soon as you mentioned FFXII AI system you hooked me, never knew that about this game and now I'm so pumped to play, will finish this playthrough of DAO(also with an awesome AI system) then start on this right away!

Unpopular opinion maybe, but I really like the naval combat turn based mini game. After a few tries, it suddenly all clicked into place, and now I love whittling down an enemy ship and crew, before going in to board them.

Exploration was much more enjoyable in Pillars 1 for me. The maps feel bigger and I loved exploring each area completely and finding herbs, loot, quests and npcs. That feeling wasn't there for me in 2. I played twice the ammount of hours than 1 but it didn't feel like it.

You mention that the audience enjoys the 100% reviews (we do), do you enjoy 100% play throughs? I imagine for some of the games it is much better than others but it seems time consuming either way.

I actually enjoy the text events, even the ship battles. It makes me feel like I'm playing tabletop D&D.

Fair enough though. It's not something I'd imagine everyone going for

spot on review i'd say.
it does the same thing like the first one but improved on so many things that i think this is just better overall, the biggest gripe i think anyone could have about this game is the added pirate theme and guns being in it which can be either a detriment to people wanting that medieval fantasy thing, but those who like the whole pirate thing will just like this game more than its predecessor for it.

now some may say it is short but for me personally i'd say it's nice with an cRPG that doesn't overstay its welcome longer than you want it to which is a big plus for me since it lends itself to replaying the game more and trying out new characters and new builds and other story choices.

however i do recommend people somewhat who didn't play the first one to go back and play that one first because it really does set up the world so you don't feel as lost in this one, there's lore that gets called back to, returning companions and it's just overall a continuation of the first one, also getting to play the first one lets you get used to the character building and combat a bit because it is very similar in many ways and also the pleasure of continuing your character from the first game is kinda fun, but that's just my personal opinion on that.

lol there should be multiplayer where you just set you AI party vs someone else's to see who wins. btw I'd love to have "to good AI" with BG1 and BG2.

I adored this game on release, sunk about 300 hours into it. Played it a few years later on console, and its BAD. Crashes, unbearably bad inventory, horrible controls, etc. Very strong recommend on PC, sadly a hard pass on console.

I forgot to come back and say thank you. I watched this and finally bought the game. I already loved the first, so this vid helped me to finally make up my mind. Should have been a no-brainer, but I do QA for a living, so I am really picky about what I play for fun. I hope more people get into this one, because Obsidian nailed it for any older RPG fan. Actually for anyone who loves a really top notch RPG.

This is convenient where DoS2 is challenging and they both knock it out of the park.
Feels like a BG game from the game areas.

Hi Mort,
I just picked up this game, I enjoyed PoE 1 but not a huge fan of real-time with pause. I love the Divinity Original Sin games and all versions of XCOM are my one most played series.
So really want to play this in Turned-based mode..
Wondering if you did or will do a comparison of the two systems, would love to get your take on it..

length with good story is a must for me. I dont like spending hours on "contents" that are filler. Usually this is prominent on rpg with pointless base building/management mechanics.I get it if is sandbox game for story oriented rpg is a no-no for me.

I think I understand why this game didn't do as well as the first one. Just got to Neketaka and did a few quests, and the multiple slangs is really quite confusing, thats strike 1. It's a nice touch, but there's just too much, like how too much of a good food can make you sick level of too much.

Secondly, it really felt like nobody is giving a rat's crap about the impending apocalypse. Unlike the first game and the hollow born crisis, everyone knows something fucky is going on, and they are trying to fix it in their own way, while deadfire is the complete opposite. Felt like there's just no agency and that nobody cares, this mood can easily spread to the player, like how it's pretty much spread to me. Why bother with the stupid giant statue? Let's deal in petty politics instead.

The biggest problem with this game on console is that they never patched over the combat log so you can't ever see your rolls. Ruins the whole game

I enjoyed PoE2 more than DoS2.
Better story, more structured without overloading it, and easier to understand it without being simplistic. DoS2 is simply hard to follow, i mean i want to play a game not study history and keep notes. I mean in DoS2 after a point i simply couldn't follow the story. Couldn't understand the consequences of my choices and actions. I just followed my Journal doing the quests like an auto-pilot.
PoE2 was worse in the battle Mechanics, almost too easy after a certain point no realy challenge while DoS2 was way better tactically, really original concepts like elemental and teleportation, but overall since RPGS should prioritize the story experience imho i'd say PoE2 was better. If i wanted pure Turn Based Strategy i would play Battle Brothers or something.

I hope i make sense.
Great content btw, thank you for everything

I absolutely loved PoE1 but could never get into Deadfire. Maybe I was just awful at the game, but I could never afford virtually any of the ship upgrades, let alone a new ship, so any time I had to sail anywhere was a massive headache. I also just wasn't a big fan of some of the class design changes.

I'm playing it right now. It's pretty fun a bit on the easy side. I'm liking the multiclass and subclasses playing a ranger/assasin with a ghost lion companion :D love it.
I find myself struggling to be motivated by the main plot though. spoilers
After catching up to Eothas several times I kinda agree with him XD the other deities are pretty crap, so breaking their whole operation is not a bad idea.

I was trying to side with the Huana but then they wanted me to blow up a powder house with everyone inside for political gain, then frame some poor dude and even lie in court that he and his faction did it XD Then there was also the trapped dragon etc etc.. so now my watcher went independent upgrading the ship to not have to help any faction because he doesn't want to deal with this

I'm actually playing through the first pillars game on ps5 (have the PS4 version) and the frequency of loading screens is just killing my flow... It's just way too much and was wondering if that's fixed with the sequel? I'm about to hop off this game and just get on deadfire if the loading screens aren't every time you enter a door lmao.

I wish more crpgs did offer robust AI's like this game though. I'm playing through the EE version of Baldur's Gate, and 2 out of 3 of my fighters just retreat back to my ranged characters after the first enemy dies despite there being 2+ enemies. So every time an enemy dies I have to quickly pause the game with my controller and tell them to attack the next enemy manually. Because they often retreat fairly quickly, this AI is causing me to lose a ton of DPS throughout the game because it takes time to retreat and then walk back before they start attacking again. This is really stupid and I am honestly thankful the AI is not trash like that in Pillars of Eternity.

Just a quick question (i realize this is a year old video). Mortismal didn't actually do the Ultimate (not sure if it was an achievement like in Pillars 1) challenge with all of the God's challenges and such, did he? That would seem outlandish if he did. I know that one guy managed it at least, back in the day a few years ago, where you had to video the whole thing. I did it theoretically, but not actually, where I won every fight and did each part you had to do, but without actually doing it in hardcore and expert. I did do the Ultiamte in Pillars 1, where you beat all bosses, finish the game, and beat the dragons, bounties, and archmages on exert hardcore trial of iron mode, but I'm quite impressed if Mortismal did that. That is hundreds of hours of investment, at least for me, heh. Oh, ok, he covers Pillars 1 not doing 100 in this video, although the reason given is a kickstarter achievement. Still, I'd be shocked if he had done Ultimate in either game. Ultimate must not be an actual achievement in Pillars 2, since his profile is public and he did, in fact, 100% the achievements.
