My problem is similar, but involves AndroidX, I think. My project builds and runs with Android Studio, but I am trying to get it to build and run with IntelliJ. IntelliJ is insisting on Gradle 6.5, whereas the project had been building with Gradle 4.1. I don't know whether that is a factor in the problem. It's possible that IntelliJ is asking for a higher version because of other languages I use it for.(I suppose I could try a clean IntelliJ install, but I don't want to mess with it supporting the other projects if I don't need to.)

The core problem involves "inflating class androidx.appcompat.widget.AppCompatTextView". This is not a problem when running the Android Studio build, but it is when running the IntelliJ build of the same source. I suspect their may also be problems with ConstraintLayout and other androidx things, but execution doesn't get far enough for me to tell. Possibly it could relate to a theme that is used. I also use libgdx in my project, but I don't think that is related. The crash occurs before I run any animated screens with libgdx.
