You have done several videos on figure face painting; German infantry, and US tankers and infantry. Which process do think is the best/easiest one for the faces. Is it this one you did for The Alpine US tanker?

How long did you let the wash sit before removing excess with thinner?

I've seen images (motorcyclists I think) in which the riders had dirt covered faces except for where they were covered by the goggles, would that be appropriate in this application, and how would you approach it?

Unless I missed it, you did not show the color you used for the boots. Can you say what that color is?

I saw TankCommander's comment, but I'm not a 'rivet counter' with respect to absolute accuracy. I just like to make them look realistic and this video will greatly help me do a better job on my figures.

Thanks.

Fantastic job of giving that figure a life-like / realistic appearance. I'll have to try this technique - if my eye-sight will permit it.

You use multiple thin glaze layers on the face, but what about the uniform? Are they also multiple thin layers?

Can I just ask, by the time the fourth coat has gone onto the face, is there any semblance of the initial black primer and white spray highlight? It would appear that they have been completely painted over by the subsequent coats?

I find it hard to believe you're not just covering the last layer of paint with the next layer.

Damn that came out fantastic, as always. What ratio do you thin the gauzy agent (if at all, that one seems airbrush ready in the bottle) and matt varnish to? And would my Vallejo airbrush cleaner work for cleaning the varnishes out? (I literally just got my first airbrush and I'm still learning how to use/care for it).

every time I use enamel thinner (Humbrol enamel thinner) it still damages the paint through the protectant coat. (Vallejo or Mig Acyrilic gloss). I get scared of weathering because of this.

Loving the tutorials Hank. I’ve just returned to scale modelling after a break of 40 year!!!. Just purchased tamiya’s 1/35 Sherman with figures so this has come just right. Can I just ask, when you apply a gloss varnish is it an acrylic varnish you use ? Thanks again from the UK

Interesting subject and thanks for the effort. But quick tip ? Your glazes are WAY too thick. No graduation of the colours are visible as a result of this.... Go way thinner and build up the layers. Take a look on the Night Shift channel.. :)

Nice video. Have you ever tried to hollow out the lenses on the goggles and filling them with UV resin after painting the interior area in the helmet base color? I've had some nice results with that technique.

Hello Hank, great work. I am a big fan of your work. But if i can give you a Top, so check out the Video from Night Shift how he paints figures. In your work you are covering all the shadows from the black and white basing with to thick coats of the base paints. So it don't shine thru it any more. In his style he is painting in very, very thin layers (glaze) and so you have the control how much the black and white basing will shine thru it. That looks amazing and is almost like cheating. That can every of us do. It's so easy and looks really awesome. Painting figures is not for everyone, but his style is easy to do and in my oppinon the best way. I have checked it on figures in 1/24 and it worked very good for me. Check the video and let me know what you think about it. Greets from a big fan from Germany. 😃

Amazing , really brings the Commander out. I always thought you needed the "whites of the eyes" but they don't make a brush small enough, and like you mention you don't need the. I was amazed at the patches being molded in, this is one detail soldier and blends perfectly with the tank finish. Didn't Patton design a special tank uniform that he wanted the military to approve? I think it had a Gold helmet

Great tutorial!

I have to mention two things:

M1944 goggles were not very commonly used during WWII and there are very few photos of them in use in the ETO. I have a feeling the photo you showed in the video was taken after WWII. Personally, I would not use figures with them on for WWII US models. I prefer figures with no goggles (crews were discouraged from wearing goggles in exposed locations to avoid reflecting light and giving away their position), Polaroid 1021s (similar to M44s but with gray rubber), or M1938 Resistal goggles as these were the most commonly used goggles by US GIs and vehicle crews during WWII.

Also, you painted the boots the wrong color. It appears your commander has the canvas and rubber Overshoes on. Those were black and worn over top of the main combat boots of any type a WWII GI may be wearing.
