we used latex for our report as per recommendation/provided sample by our committee
while learning it I was wondering why would this be used instead of word, as its pretty much coding

but there was one feature I really liked: different parts of the report can be written in different files and folders (in overleaf)
this way i wouldn't have to scroll through like 20 pages looking for what exactly I need to update etc, and it was easier to just manage and see progress etc
also it can be more format consistent this way in between of multiple people working on same report

however it was too difficult to just learn on a whim like that so we did go back to word iirc

I am also thinking and wondering, latex can probably be automated and scripted etc :D
might have a look at it again when in geeky mode

I prefer writing my essays in Android Studio

My favourite moments:
1. Including 20+ packages and forgetting what they do and why you included
2. Halfway through my thesis I decided to switch from natbib to biblatex. Just took me 10 hours, but now my Sources are still formatted 99% the same. Worth it.
3. ACTUALLY reading the 60+ pages documentation of package (acro) and starting to realky use it
4. Spending a day to understand the configurations in TeXmaker ( I lied, I didn‘t )
5. When you decide to stop using [H] and just let everything float
6. Fancy Math symbols
7. Knowing the math spacing and brackets by heart

My unis only professor that is decent and actually knows that LaTeX is good stopped teaching thesis related subjects. Now everyone in my batch just uses word instead of overleaf 😂 I'm lucky I sat in one of his classes because I was friends with some seniors when I was a sophomore.

All my theses and project papers have been done in LaTeX. It would be a royal pain in the behind to do otherwise, as I remember two semesters of pulling each week an all nighter in OpenOffice to do a lab report, I had to do plots in gnuplot and then fit the curves using the fit function. After two semesters of this bullshit I said nevermore and since then any big or small document gets the LaTeX treatment.

Use the right tool for the job. LibreOffice is good enough for most things, dont overcomplicate

Using LaTeX is like using cmd, you can do it, sometimes you even have to, but for 9 out of 10 things you probably shouldn't.

Using a pencil and paper is actually the easiest way to write something, change my mind

I “learned” LaTeX by throwing my text at ChatGPT and telling it to give me LaTeX. It’s amazing at doing so - gives me packages I need, proper syntax, formulas, etc. I hardly remember anything but can crank out LaTeX all day now. Very cool.

I don't know why this video showed up in my algorithm, but I used LaTeX to write my graduation thesis. As a Korean user, though, even the installation process was a huge challenge. The installation files that supported Korean were enormous, and the university server was as slow as a snail. After installation, even getting a simple 'hello world' to display produced errors, and it took me two days just to figure out what was wrong. It's an experience I never want to go through again.

There's an addon for LibreOffice called TexMaths which really helped me and you can just click on the Equation/Function/Symbol you need.

I send them the LaTeX file, so they can have fun too.

Fpr anyone lookimg for a modern and *SANE* alternative to latex, may i present to you **Typst**. It is a moderm an altenative to latex, without all the boilerplate and hassle, it is functional(unlike latex which is macro based), it is fast(like even big pdf compiles in mere miliseconds), it is boilerplate free(most of the functionality is built-in and has nice light-weight syntax), batteries includee(aka most of things that are a pain latex like figure wrapping, or different format pictures, are a built-in and solved problem in typst).

So if you are a frustrated expirienced latex user, or a newbie looking for something that won't force you to make templates for everylittle thing - look no further.

My PI had everyone write and compile their papers on HIS computer (ssh in) as he loved his LaTeX compiler .Then one Christmas his computer died.....
Thankfully we then moved to overleaf... then he became the eye of Sauron, ever watching our drafts. Checking if we are writing and what edits we are making.

We of the LaTex community should gather together and force Open AI to use a LaTex compatible with Notion, because it always put in this format \[ expression ]\ and is a pain in the ass to remove all the \[ from the text

LaTeX is actually overrated in my opinion. Love it when I write equations but it's a mess when you deal with lots of images & tables in your document.

Goddamn I remember how much I had to work to make those damn data tables. I had no idea that latex table generators existed. For around one year, I made all tables manually.
