@theglobehopper actually, the scientists use this for a very clear cause. They used the virtual environment to explore the behavior of place neurons. Place neurons play a key role in mammals to determine their spatial location. They only fire during motion though. We do not have the tech to record from cells that are moving. The virtual environment allowed the cells to activate without actually moving so they could be studied. Research from this was published in Nature.

I agree with those below. Animal cruelty is rarely justified and this IS DEFINITELY NOT further any cause. The 'scientists' here should be reclassified as animal tormentors and be reported to the authorities

I hate what we do to animals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't care what it's for. And I'm a bachelor of science in psychology major...I am so disheartened every time I am asked to watch these injustices to the poor mice.

Actually, there isn't. The reason they had to do that was because part of the device requires a direct connection to certain nerves, and that connection is broken by even very slight movement.

It was my first reaction. Many a rat went through mazes when I was at Yale. The intelligence of a rat is amazing by the way. However I got the distinct feeling that this experiment bordered on torture..
