Huh. Y'know, thinking about it, it makes sense his voice would be deeper. Most people, when they yell, their voices increase in pitch automatically. So logically, his speaking voice would have been deeper than his speech voice. But it still feels... weird? Like I know the speech voice is put-on, and when men use put-on voices, they so often deepen them to sound more intimidating, so a part of me expected his real voice to be higher despite the fact that the mechanics of his yelling would have probably prevented that from being the case.

Very interesting comments all round. I too was surprised at the deepness and richness of his normal talking voice. I don't know why but I always figured it might be have been tinny in that context and that he consciously deepened it for his speeches as an actor can manipulate the tembre of their voice for purposes of characterization. On another note regarding the tape I find it simply astonishing that the SS guards allowed the technician to keep it on the specious promise he would destroy it. The way they ordinarily went about things you'd think they would have detained the guy (and then "disappeared" him) and confiscated the tape for destruction themselves. I am just mystified that that didn't happen.
