Combat Sambo is very similar to MMA if not basically the same thing. If you practice that all your life even from childhood, you will essentially have much much more MMA experience than anybody you come across these days, because most MMA fighters have still transitioned into MMA from some other style or sport.

Main reason why khabib and islam are so good is the versatility. Both have sambo, judo , wrestling and striking at a very high level. All those combined leave no gaps to exploit

The funniest thing is that both sambo and BJJ have the same roots in Japan. The creator of sambo lived in Japan for several years and became acquainted with Japanese jiu-jitsu there. Judo, boxing, kuresh (various types of wrestling of the Turkic and Mongolian peoples of the USSR), and jiu-jitsu formed the basis of army or combat sambo.

add Gracie Jiu Jitsu instead BJJ would give Sambist's(Combat style) more advantage in ground control as for improving Striking I pick Filipino Martial Arts(especially Pekiti Tirsia Kali), American Kenpo, & Wing Chun. And it wouldn't kill to learn a few effective Aikido techniques for throwing, pressure points, & joint locks!
