100 Dresses ~ One For Every Year In The 1800s | Cultured Elegance

The only style I haven't really liked in this century was the back-bustle c.1880s onwards. I like the Princess style. My favourite has always been the 1840s through to about mid 1860s, and this video only reinforces that preference! It's probably why my favourite couture period of the last century is 1950s. I think the bustle was attempting to emulate Sarah Baartman, the Khoisan woman being paraded in London at that time. I actually cannot imagine how awkward it must have been trying to sit down with a bustle on, particularly the shelf-type variety. Now you need to do another of these, WITH THE HATS, SHAWLS, PARASOLS, etc. Thank you very much. Greetings form South Africa.

I liked 1800 to about 1808 the best.

I love the regency gowns but I do love a second bustle era gown too.

I liked 1870 and 1890. Don't care for bustles or huge puffy sleeves. Prefer the A-line style.

エンパイア時代のシュミーズドレスにだけ注目すると、マリー・アントワネット辺りから始まったフランス、パリの流行のように思うかもしれません。

マリー・アントワネットのプチトリアノン宮の田舎遊びやシュミーズドレスは、彼女がオーストリアの田舎を恋しがったからとか、楽だからというのもあるでしょうが、啓蒙主義、ルソー当たりの「自然に帰れ」というのが、当時の知識人の流行だったからでもありますよね。

興味深いことにこれ、実はウィーンでもそうなのですよね。

もう少し後、ちょうどウィーン会議やその後のメッテルニヒ体制下で流行ったビーダーマイヤースタイルが、まさにこれなのです。

この動画に出てくるものだと、エンパイア時代のシュミーズドレスではなく、ダヴィッド夫人が着ているような、バストのすぐ下で切り替えるスタイルながら、少し厚手のシルクを用い、パフスリープがついているスタイル。

ベートーヴェンやシューベルトの周囲にいた女性達の肖像画がまさにこれですね。ベートーヴェンの「不滅の恋人」のモデルとか、シューベルトのミューズと言われる、カロリーネ・エステルハーツィー伯爵令嬢とか。

髪型も、ショートではなく少し伸ばして巻き毛を結い上げたり、左右の顔の横で結んで縦ロールの巻き毛を垂らしたりしている。

理由として考えられるのは、やはりフランス革命時代のパリでは、貴族は命の危険に晒されていて、ごてごてと着飾ったり、髪を高く結い上げたり鬘を被ったりはできなかっただろうし、庶民は猶更。


だから、革命後に権力をもったナポレオンやその取り巻き達に連なる女性達も、革命の趣旨からしても、かつての王侯貴族とは異なるということを、服装でも示さざるを得なかったのではないかな、と。

それがウィーン会議の時期にウィーンにも伝わった。そして絶対王制を保持しようとする王侯貴族の間でも流行った。

加えて市民階級の勃興に伴い、市民の富裕層の間でも流行った。シューベルティアーデに集ったのは、ショーバーなど少数を除けば、市民階級ですから。

で、サロンではシュミーズドレスのように漉けるほど薄くはない、しなやかなシルクのドレスを纏い、アッツェンブルックなどに遠出をする際には、多分、もう少し気軽な生地のものも着たのではないかな、と。

当時は多分、綿織物も普及していただろうし、モスリンとかも？

その後、女性のドレスのウェストが絞られ、シルクの生地も厚くなり、装飾も増えていく時期というのは、フランスでも帝政、共和制を経て王政、帝政が復活した時代。

フランスではナポレオンと皇后ウジェニーの時代、ウィーンではフランツ・ヨーゼフ皇帝と皇后エリーザベートの時代、或いはヨハン・シュトラウス２世とオペレッタ全盛期なわけでしょう？

つまり、革命前の絶対王制を回顧し、ファッション的にもそうしたものに戻ろうとした時代ですよね？　力をつけてきた市民が絶対王制を破壊しようとするのを必死で抑えていた時代。

シュミーズドレスほどではないけれど、胸元で切り替える楽なスタイルが流行ったウィーン会議後のウィーンは、メッテルニヒ体制下で市民の力を抑えながらも、フランス革命の市民革命の理想の実現を市民が信じた時代なのです。

ビーダーマイヤー時代、ちょうどシューベルトが生きた時代と、その直後の時代ですね。シューベルトが亡くなった１０年後のウィーン３月革命前夜の時代かな？

興味深いのは、ウィーンやザルツブルク、グラーツ、ミュンヘンなどでは、特に１８２０～４０年代のスタイルが Wiener Schnitt という、ウェストを細く絞る切り替えの民族衣装トラハテンとして、今でも残っているということ。

村の女性の晴れ着に端を発する、胴の部分に芯地の裏を張り、エプロンを付けたジャンパースカート型のディルンドゥルという民族衣装もそうなのですが、より貴族や上流市民の衣装に近い、シルク地で袖が付き、エプロンのないディルンドゥルや、トラハテンスタイルの上着、スーツ、コートなどだと、もっとその傾向が強い。

私も好きで、何着も持っています。

それだけ、ウィーンやミュンヘンなどは、なかなか市民革命が浸透せず、皇帝や王侯貴族の権力が強く、市民も今でもそれにノスタルジーを感じているということでしょう。

Love 1880s large hoop skirts. Do not like 1830s I just think it was ugly.

I'm only here to observe the style and accuracy of them.

I suppose I prefer the 1890's to all the others. To me they are the prettiest and the most practical. I always thought hoops and bustles were ridiculous. And some of the puffy sleeves! LOL! I could see some practicality with hoops, as they gave a woman a better chance of not stepping on her skirt, not to mention relieved her of having to wear so many petticoats. But the bustle? That strikes me as a total affectation.

1860s was my favorite, it reminds me of Gone With The Wind one of my favorite movies.

1868: Aniline dyes have arrived, I see lol. The 1860s are so impractical, but so pretty. I have never been able to stand either of the Bustle Eras or the Natural Form look. I want to be poofy. Just maybe not like I'm wearing pool floaties (I'm looking at you, 1830s).

I wonder if she's wearing a wig i saw her hair from 5 yrs. & it's was very thin & very frizzy & broken ends like mine look a long time ago when is blow dry & that's it W says it's a wig

Always felt that puffed sleeves look ridiculous on a grown woman.
...and skirts 4 ft wide are a oh heck no. But I'm a very 20th-21st Century Woman, and the old dress requirements are reflective of women's Lower rank.
