Minumum gain. Minimum distortion. Use a bit of gain on a la grange pedal at 9 o clock. Split the coils in the front.

I dunno, I think the young guns of today spend more time chasing tone than the older dogs, like me, ever did. For me, the snarl from a Les Paul thru a cranked Marshall Plexi really is the secret sauce.

dont mean to be an ass but the critical element of The Ocean riff is overwhelming volume on a mostly clean amp.

Dude, i have a SG, the tone between a SG and a Les Paul is almost identical, i play a SG because i think is more comfortable than a Les Paul, but i have a tone that is very close (not identical) to Jimmy's, for me its all about the pickup and the reverb, just putting those two together and i sound a little close to the master

59 les Paul with an overwound, Alnico II PAF pickup in the neck and a standard t-top in the bridge. Neck pu is slightly hotter than the bridge. His tone gets a slight boost and tonal change by from running into an echoplex as the preamp tubes are providing this even when the delay is not actively being used. This goes into a Marshall plexi that has been modded with KT88 tubes for more clean head room and some tightening of the lower and lower mid range frequencies. Amp settings: treble usually at 8-10, mid 0-4, bass 0-4, presence around 7 and volume/gain around halfway. There ya go folks.

I was so fortunate to personally know Clive Coulson ( Jimmy's Right Hand Man) who taught me about those unique Humbuckers...The Neck PAF pickup was not normal.(Hear No Quarter live)

sounds good I would throw a touch of a light drive in the front just to give it a little extra bite.

Personally the re creation is a put too twangy for the first song “the ocean” I think.

How long did it take to figure out you forgot the Echoplex?

I absolutely love your videos, and your playing, but this tone wasn't even close. Jimmy had thicker tone, a little more sloppy.

I feel like a Les Paul is kinda a telecaster on steroids.

You can get the SRTS tone without all the equipment . It’s all in the pickups . Bryan from Australia. Sells the modified pickups he rewinds pickups one is turned around like Peter green . He has a pedal Marshall sound through a music man amp . He got the mod from Pages guitar tech in the early 70s . I ordered a pair and there awesome. All three settings , he shows what pickup setting he’s using for each song . Watch his Demo on you tube . And it’s affordable and not a one trick pony . You did good on this video . What everyone misses with Jimmy is his middle tone. You have to work with your pickups heights, adjustable pole screw and volume and tone knobs and it is worth it.

studio or live tone? vox ac30 in studio with telecaster and Marshall or orange or Voxac30 live with a les paul. 60s les paul does not matter. However even with that you will still sound like you.

Respectfully, sorry, i don't see the tone you dialed in as right. Too much treble, presence, and high mid focus.
Darker and warmer and you got it nailed.

Room and touch of echoplex, plate added after on the ocean. Echo before verb helps get that curious smear

Page tone? Tonebender. Amp. Turn guitar up and down. All the tones he used will be achievable. Light and shade.
Fuzzface will get ya in the ballpark too.
The key is with the compression with the fuzz, you turn the guitar way down ya get crystaline cleans and as you crank the guitar all the shades you seek will become apparent. Don't neglect your tone controls either.. añd you will find that midrange honk, too.
