API Governance: Discover the ‘Unknown Unknowns' for Tighter Security

As the adage goes, you can't manage – or secure – what you don't know about.

At the start of the year, Axway Catalysts VP Brian Otten had advised enterprises to focus on zero-trust security and security through the entire stack to avoid becoming another high-profile security breach. Halfway through 2024, we’re following up on our digital transformation predictions – and looking to what’s next.

In this new interview, Brian notes that many enterprise leaders are realizing they don’t necessarily know how many APIs they have or where there may be security gaps.

“One of the things that is going to be important is being able to discover the ‘unknown unknowns.’ So, what on the network looks like an API call, for example, and the ability to detect it, understand where that came from, and then very quickly not just say, ‘Oh, okay well, we want to shut that down.’
It may be something very valuable, and it may be something that you want to bring into the fold.

So, having the ability, like we're thinking about with our Amplify Platform, to say, ‘hey, we can detect these things. We can integrate with other security solutions,’ and be able to sniff out these unknown or unmanaged APIs.

They're out there, that's the reality, people are calling these things. The trick is to get that back into governance.”
