Im currently trying to spec out my first PC build, I want something that'll run modeling/editing programs while also having decent gaming performance without having to spend too much. Ive chosen to go with the Ryzen 5 7600 as the CPU and is now trying to make a decision on what GPU to pair it with. I've been looking at both the RTX 4060 and RX 7600 XT but isn't sure what one is best for my needs. Both seem to have similar performance and also cost roughly the same ($20 NZD difference). After watching this, Im also seriously considering getting a used RX 6700 XT instead, though im a little hesitant buying used and would rather buy new. Any suggestions?

man am i ever split between the RTX 4060 and the 7600
they are nearly identical in raster performance but i really really prefer nvidia's
control panel, features and nvidia inspector.
but the 4060 is $399 CAD and the 7600 is $359

not a big difference at all
(also the 6700xt and 4060ti are well over $500 so they are out of the question)

Ive seen 7600s drop to 209$ open box since BB actually sells openbox gpus exclusive to the gigabyte brand. Same with 360$ for their 7700xt....and around 409 for their 4070. IMO id go for one of the higher tier options if you happen to have access to one of these gigabyte open box deals. Upgraded from a 3070 strix which i tuned to 3070ti levels/yields. To a 700$ open box 4070ti gaming OC while selling my old gpu to half my purchase price. IMO if you have the funding buy the tier higher option be it 4070 or 7700xt open box and sell what gpu you have if you can manage some RECOUP $$$ and IMO it makes up the difference in price between the 329$ msrp for this card and a step higher. You can go second hand for some 3+ year old cards but theres no telling if they were mined on or were running at 1.1v/OC in a hot chassis with a poor quality psu. At least look into if the card was ran UV by the previous owner to ate least know what kind of life is left on those used cards. IMO im more or less looking forward to these 7600xts "down the road" when theyre price cut 50$+ to see their true value/aspects. Then in say 6m....you can nab a 7600xt open box/gigabyte via BB for damn near 229-239$ which seems much more viable vs knowing you can actually play 1440p comfortably with a 7700xt or 4070. Just my opinion bearing in mind....your cpu/ram/chipset are also UP to stuff...as it is otherwise the 4060 8gb or a card like this 7600xt may be your highest viable option from a gpu/bottleneck standpoint. Most ppl tend to forget theyre using a 7800X3D in their test bench...these results esp the higher tier gpus and their would be frame yield gaps among hte "budget/midrange" options are a lot less apparent when you pair those 500$+ gpus with older gen cpu/chipsets and the potential for slower ram like 3200mhz or slower. Which IMO...makes them an even worse option vs just getting an older/used gpu thats also much cheaper. When your rig cant even YIELD these frames even with a 7600XT. Depending on the platform you could be looking at upwards of a net 30% loss in fps compared to these charts IJS. But these bottleneck/severities are a lot more apparent the higher you go up the gpu scale/bandwidth. OR even Mainboard PCI-E speed/lanes access if you have a budget board and multiple M.2 drives or populated the wrong sata ports which changes your PCI-e lanes orientation/speed. Things can go from meh/bad to even worse...its why IMO some of these GPUS wind up being returend/sold as open box...bc ppl see these charts....buy buy buy....then they benchmark a few games...and realize they have to get a tier up just to get actual/viable fps. IS what it is.

For AI users it can be alluring since most are on Linux anyway and AMD cards have more similar performance to Nvidia's there (still slower tho, but it's 16GB of VRAM). For gaming? Pass.

Used 6700xts going for 250 or less
6800/6800xt going for 300-400

Why even go next gen at this point? If youre comfortable with used market and you have $400 you could 100% get a 6800/6800xt

The whole value aspect of course differs a lot per region / country. If I filter over here for anything RTX 3000 or 4000, or anything 6000 series or 7000 series' and I want 12gb or more, the RTX3060 is quite cheaper with 300 euros give or take. The 7600xt sits around 370 euros now. The 6700xt is unavailable here for under 400 EUR, and the 6750XT has better availability, but starts at over 400 EUR. The fact that the first RTX 4000 series matching this is still the 4060 TI-16gb starting at 450 EUR... is just crazy (non)value.

Still pretty happy with my 7600 Hellhound (8G of course) I bought half a year ago for 219€, including shipping and a copy of Starfield. The only thing I would complain about is that undervolting is almost impossible, still not sure why. Runs stable with 2900Mhz boost at 1.185V (instead of 1.2). But even with reduced boost I can't really reduce voltage by a reasonable margin. Behaves a bit odd, thoug, doesn't tend to crash so much at full load, some benchmarks run for hours without issues, but when playing older games.

I think whats telling is the reception for any GPU Nvidia comes out, vs AMD. Every time Nvidia comes out with expensive garbage, such as the 2070S, 2080S vs 50$ cheaper Vega cards (OC beasts), 600$ 3070 vs 400$ RX 6800, or the recent 4060 TI literally being the same performance as 3060 TI, people keep giving the cards the benefit of the doubt. Whenever AMD comes out with a card, it's always complaints, always people angry about not enough this or not enough that. In this case, people are literally complaining that the 7600 XT is too small of an uplift over the 7600. Except, they completely forget that it beats out the main competition, and it makes a lot of sense for casual workers that game sometimes, like for a blender or MLops setup. in cases like that when 60$ extra gives you 2x performance uplift for those tasks, its a no-brainer.

could have been 12GB, but i guess 16 was easier. i'm in Australia, so $500 is still basically my whole current PC setup, R5 2400G with an X570 MB, i just can't justify going higher, but i want it to last half a decade. AV1 is pretty essential for that
