Suicide and the dark side of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge

It's too bad people who were thinking about doing this there was somebody sitting on the bridge they could talk to First and the person could say why they're going to do it and the person on the bridge could give them up solution and then I could just get back off the bridge and live their life differently that's so sad

Hopefully the bridge has safety measures so people can’t jump off so easily.

I hate that bridge. I remember when the original was struck by that tanker. My family was at Fort DeSoto State Park and could see that big, gaping hole where the bridge span was completely destroyed.
So sad.

They should maybe make a net and other safety things making it impossible to kill oneself on these popular bridges.

The stories where people supposedly showed no signs and gave no warnings and left no notes and just go like zombies in the middle of the night to jump off a bridge are pretty creepy sounding. Can anyone explain it?

My brother committed suicide by jumping off of this bridge back in November of 2000, just a couple of days before Thanksgiving.

Skyway is 430 feet high, I don’t know what they’re talking about 180 feet. Driving over this bridge scares the living shit out of me.. rip to the ones that jumped.

I hate traveling across this bridge, or any large bridge for that matter, but the first time I went across the Skyway someone has just jumped off about 2 min earlier. The car was sitting at the top, hazards on and the cops hadn’t even gotten there yet. It really affected me for a week. Knowing you were just a minute away from someone’s most desperate moment.

At the middle it is 180 feet from the roadway to the water. When you add the height of masts which support the suspension cables, the total is 430 feet. Still, 180 feet is a frightening drop. How can someone have the courage to jump but not the courage to live?

My grandfather David Maass jumped off this bridge in 1999. He lost both his sons and his mother. I now understand having kids of my own.

There are many people who are terrified of heights and being on a bridge like this creates incredible panic. It's a phobia, not a death wish, that could incapacitate a person's clear thinking and lead them to do something completely irrational. Like stopping their car, getting out and jumping. I would not call that suicide.

I would jump off that bridge NOW if I could!! I have no one. I haven't for over 7 years. I am ready to go. Actually considering hanging myself in my garage.

"Seek help". What help? Counselors listen and make you another appointment. No picking up the phone in between when in need.

fun fact: in the 80s, a ship hit the old Skyway Bridge, and it collapsed, killing 35, leading to the new Skyway Bridge to be built and remove the old one

i remember driving over this bridge every weekend to visit my aunt in Fort Myers and i started crying one time because every time i came across the bridge there was nothing but then one weekend there were a bunch of fence on the side of the bridge and i knew exactly why. I was always really scared of the bridge for its height. Its really sad to how many deaths have happened on this bridge, i feel so bad for her husband and everyone else that have commit suicide on that bridge. Rest in peace to all of them <3

Last time I drove over this bridge, I felt very anxious, I felt I was having a panic attack and I won't drive over that bridge ever again, Someone or a family member would have to give me a ride, but I won't drive a car over that bridge, It makes me feel unsecure 😢😢😢
