Dolphins are such successful predators that they can waste time and energy playing as much as they do. This is a basic necessity to evolve intelligence. If youre too busy just trying to stay alive you dont have enough time to play with bubble rings for hours at a time and therefore you dont learn as much by doing so. Being successful enough that you can waste time playing is the first step to intelligence. Atleast biologically. I dont think ai will have to work under the same constraints. That's why it's so different.

Play is such an amazing sign of intelligence. Many people interpret that as "play will make the dolphins smarter." That's not the case though. They were already smart. "Dolphins are smart therefore they play." That's what's really going on. Play is an example of growing past your animal instincts of self-preservation and survival strategies. Our dopamine system rewards us when we do things that will help us to propagate our species. Play is a realization that you can trigger these dopamine responses without actually needing to do anything at all for your evolutionary survival. The dolphins are smart enough to understand that they can live a life MORE than just that of animal instinct. They really are quite smart. With cats, however, their type of play is very much focused around triggering that animalistic dopamine hunting response. So their not just playing for plays sake which is feeling good. Some cats are more than smart enough to do this, but most just emulate what they'd be doing naturally to get that dopamine. So it doesn't really compare with what the dolphins are doing, but it's also not the best example of dolphins playing for plays sake as the biting of the rings can be seen as hunting behavior. But it really reads more like they are playing instead of hunting simulation. And there are much better videos out there showing dolphins playing games that don't really have anything to do with their kind of hunting. I wonder if dolphins are smart enough to understand that other creatures are conscious just the same as the dolphins and that have information about the universe that the dolphins don't have. This is the step that separates human intellect from animal.

Whales and dolphins blow bubble rings and play with them.
Why say they never saw bubble rings?
It's in their nature.
