I love this game. I still play it at a local arcade on retro arcades with multiple games on each of them. The rope jumps in round 2 over the fire are ridiculously hard but otherwise great game.

Thanks for the vid. When this came out I'd just started martial arts training, and my local arcade had just started renting VHS tapes. Those were the days. I rented a lot of Brucesploitation flicks.

I never had much access to arcades back in the 80s, so it wasn't unusual for me to get copies of games for the C64 and not even know that they were arcade ports until much later. Such is the case with Rastan. I liked the C64 version, especially the music, but I never got very far in it. Mine didn't have a trainer and I just wasn't that good at it.

When the Amiga was still active, Taito ran two-page ads in magazines advertising the upcoming Amiga games, Bubble Bobble, Renegade, Sky Shark, and Rastan. I really wanted Rastan and of course, that's the only one of the four that DIDN'T come out!

When I got a Windows system that could emulate the Turbografx-16, one of the first games I tried was Rastan Saga.II. I was quite disappointed to discover that it was a different game. Not only that, in my opinion, it was inferior to the original in every way. It didn't even have vertically scrolling levels. I probably could have emulated the arcade version with MAME, but at the time, I didn't want to deal with trying to set it up and find the proper ROMs for it.

I've since played the arcade version in MAME and in various compilations under emulation. It looks and sounds great, but I still suck at it. :)

As for the MS-DOS and Apple IIgs ports, they look like they're playing too fast. Maybe that's the speed they're supposed to play at, but to me, it looks like the enemies are all moving too fast.

So I genuinely loved this one and it had me sharing it with my friends but I remembered an odd arcade situation regarding another game.

This was the Super Mario Bros. cabinet. I only saw it once at an arcade one city over from where I lived. I watched my sister play it until world 3-1 or 3-2. Suddenly halfway through the map was a void that there was no chance of advancement. She wasted her earned lives jumping into this unnatural pit over and over until it was game over.

I’ve wondered if the arcade version was rigged or this was a bug she dealt with. Maybe you played this one in arcades back in the day and know the truth. I saw plenty of Mario Bros. cabinets but the Super Mario one just this once.

Rastan was the first arcade machine I put my quarter into at Captain Video in 1987. The soundtrack hooked me in immediately when I heard it blaring louder than any other cabinet at the time.

Rastan what is best for the ZX Spectrum?
To crush your enemies twice as slow when they show up on screen. To see them hidden in the monochrome background before you! And to hear the Quifs of the game!
Rastan that is not good, better watch this video & play it on another home console!

one thing about the c64, lot of games were either bad in gameplay or graphice, or even sound, but those ones, bad looking or playing, would have awesome music to it. I remember so many games i seen with neat music that was nice to listen to.

This was one of the very first arcade machines that I bought way back in 1996. I got it off of Craigslist for $80 non-working. All that it needed was two fuses and it has worked flawlessly ever since. It gets a good amount of play in the arcade when we have company.

I had (and still have) the c64 version. It was rock hard so I never knew it was unbeatable, unless that was the reason I stopped! It was never my favourite game but I used to fire it up every so often and you know why...

Yes... the music.

Been in my head for decades.

Great video - earned a welll deserved sub from me.

There were a few highlights of this video for me. The MSDOS port has the best graphics I've ever seen in a EGA game and it seems that might've pipped Commander Keen to being the first scrolling platform game on the PC. Why does no-one ever mention that!? The Apple IIGS port is the best Apple IIGS arcade port I've seen so amazing work Novalogic for doing those ports. The other highlight of this video was learning of Warrior Blade which I hope is supported by MAME so I can check that out.

Speaking of MAME, this video was missing my fave Rastan fact. Rastan was the first 16 bit / m68k arcade game emulated by MAME, hence a significant milestone in MAME and arcade emulation.

I wasn't surprised to see Barbarian get mentioned. Barbarian is currently getting ported to the open source Uzebox console so I look forward to playing that soon.
