Thank you all for giving me insight into your feelings and beliefs. As a child I spent summers in northern MN and was always mesmerized at the traditional dances being done in Walker every week. I think now it was for commercial reasons as much as anything in the 1950's and 60's. Don't get me wrong, the commercial side was for the caucasian local business and I should hope some for the local tribes as well!

I only see 1 native american person. the rest are only part native american, thus mixed.

Too many people assume too much, but know too little. Treat people like humans and do not expect them to be who YOU want them to be.

In Uruguay European colonizers eradicated native culture and our "indians" were brutally silenced. Now people are coming together and trying to retrieve their lost history and culture. The time for union has come!

I love Native American culture!

The only people in this country of America who have the greatest right to complain are the Natives. They did not for a long time get any day, week, or month to celebrate their culture and history. Many of them still live on reservations where disease, crime, alcoholism, drug addiction, low education, and poverty abound. They are still treated with racism by some of the non-natives in neighboring towns. They deserve reparations more than anyone, but instead they receive an apology tax break, a college grant, and maybe a casino if the state allows for that. Hollywood depicted them as savage uneducated uncultured brutes in Westerns for a long time. And oil, gas, and mining companies use eminent domain to take their land and then pollute their water.

Despite all this, the one's that I've met are friendly, respectful, and eager to let you know about their culture and history. They can be angry, but they won't blame you for any of that. I feel sorry for them and angry that they have to deal with all of this. As a history teacher, I use Natives as an example of Theodore Roosevelt's stick motto. Talk softly but carry a big stick. There's always someone who will come along and try and take your stuff.

I'm in a place where I am Part Native and want to embrace it, I am a tribal member, but I don't look Native. So I feel I may be doing my Native family wrong in some ways by saying oh, I'm native american. I grew up with culture in Oklahoma but I don't experience the racism as much as those who are obviously Native. I hope to get some comments on this.
