Recently acquired an electric piano from 1987 and tried MIDI to USB cable directly to laptop which didn't work. Going to try this method now - thanks for the video!

As a newb to a midi controller (I've got that Akai yesterday). Im have Studio One Pro and GB. I have a Focusrite 18i20. So 2 questions. Will i be able to record my own samples to an audio track and use thoes sounds via the Akia? Thanks for the video, as I've been wanting to produce my own music for nearly a lifetime

Got a KORG EC-320 with MIDI out (5 pole), Connected via MiniFuse2 to Garageband.. No sound.. Cant figure out why. Probably MacOS still have to have right drivers for the piano, eventhough it's connected via Interface. Looks like MacOS don't have driver for KORG EC-320

This is SUPER helpful. I’ve been searching high and low for this answer. I have a pretty basic keyboard (post-1982) that has a MIDI OUT port on the back.

I have an old M-audio interface lying around which i discovered today has MIDI inputs in the back. All I need is the MIDI cable and hopefully I’ll be good to go. 😊🎹

One thing you didn't mention was whether it's possible to play back midi files on the keyboard. I think it should be possible, but YMMV. If the midi file uses general midi instruments, then the keyboard should/may pick them up. However the sounds may be quite different - going both ways, depending on what's installed. From KB -> DAW with plugins in the DAW pianos can be made to sound like violins, bongos, kitchen sinks - you name it. Going the other way, with older keyboards at least, the sounds you get out will depend on what was put in for the general midi selection by the manufacturer. It's a few years since I tried this, and as you mentioned it may not work with some adapters, but I think I did test this some while back, and as I recall I had it all working.

Thank you so much! Just bought an old Yamaha PSR-E303 so I could learn piano. It has MIDI In/Out, so, following what you said, standard MIDI cable plugged it in to my interface (Scarlet 2i4) and opened up the DAW (Ableton Live) and it worked! No latency, it's perfect.

do you experience any latency with the time between hitting the keys on the piano and the sound of your computer?

What if I were to skip the usage of an audio interface and plug in the keyboard directly to my pc using a cable which has midi in+out on the one end and USB type A on the other end. With no audio interface that is part of the cable.

Is this direct connection between pc and keyboard with mentioned cable possible?
