Sterns is facing charges including sexual battery and was found to have "disturbing" photos and videos on his phone, which he voluntarily handed over to investigators. The search for Madeline Soto concluded tragically when her body was discovered in Osceola County, Florida. The case, initially handled by the Orange County Sheriff's Office, was turned over to Kissimmee Police following evidence that Sterns attempted to cover his tracks, including video evidence of him discarding items in a dumpster.

Madeline was reported missing by her mother, Jennifer Soto, sparking an extensive search. This search led to the arrest of Sterns, who was seen on surveillance video disposing of Madeline's belongings in a dumpster. Further evidence suggested that Madeline was deceased before Sterns returned to the apartment complex where she was last seen alive in his vehicle.
