Glottal Stop/ Glottal T || American English Pronunciation

The ‘t’ in American English is a little bit of a nuisance. It doesn’t really know what sound it wants to make. The ‘t’ in American English can make a few different sounds in different situations—we’ve already talked about the flap to in American English in a previous post. If you haven’t checked that out it is also on this blog. In this lesson, we will discuss another sound— the glottal stop— particularly when the letter ‘t’ becomes a glottal stop. Learning to identify and pronounce this sound will truly help you better understand native English speakers and help you speak quicker and more naturally like those native English speakers.

To many nonnative English learners, it almost sounds as if the ‘t’ disappears. This is not actually what is happening. In these phrases, the ‘t’ becomes a glottal stop or a glottal t—meaning instead of pronouncing a true ‘t’ or fully aspirated ‘t’ sound, we instead produce a throaty sound. When producing this sound, we block the flow of air out of our mouths. We block it in our throats. We don’t use our mouth. We don’t use our tongue. All of the action takes place in the throat.
