I love the no outrage coverage. There's no overreaction here, just a gentle warning about the inevitability of Sony discontinuing stuff.

This is why I only pay disc games. I'm on a ps3 and my cmos battery has been dead for awhile now and doesn't effect me. Only thing I see when I start it up is asking to set the time. I don't even need to set the time. Just start the game and it loads from the hard drivedrive drive drive. So no online, no Sony store needed. Just I play my disc games and chill. I control my own game content. 😎🤘

This raises another question tho, if my PS3 CMOS is dead, can you replace it? I don't own a PS3, but I do have a PC.
On PC, if yours is dead you can buy a new one, and if you unplug and plug the motherboards CMOS battery, or replaced it with a new one the worst that can happen is the bios settings are reseted to default.
Also does this applied for Nintendo and Xbox?

Stuff like this is why I have no problem with piracy. A company is trying to rip away my ability to play something I bought with my own money, so I’ll just download the game for free and avoid being scammed.

I see piracy in my future. As a consumer I dictate the market. If I don't get what I want than I make what I want. It isn't illegal it's getting what I want from a market that doesn't provide what I want. So I make it. It's the American way. They choose to play stupid games play making digital only than they win stupid prizes. Also that will enevitably lead to the death of Sony in the gamer industry most likely but some other company will step up and make physical games to which I will go to them. There’s no guarantee when you buy a game digitally that it will be available forever, especially after 15-20 years. That’s just inherent to the digital format. The digital-exclusive psn games need to be preserved elsewhere, and games that can be preserved physically should be.

Back when psp was a thing, I use to call PlayStation about how I can save all digital content to external memory. I didn’t trust PlayStation then. Anyway, I was told I wasn’t allowed to do that. Strange how the company doesn’t like the thought of this. All I’m doing is making sure I don’t ever loose my content that I paid for. Anyway, once I had access to a pc, I found a manual way of saving psp games, ps1 games, movies,tv episodes to and from psp & external hard drive. Still have all this content saved on, now to 1tb ssd external. This also helps stop the over use of internet data usage which is only 1tb per month which is about 33gb per day. I call bs on the software not sold to me. I physically paid for a digital copy. So what this agreement says to us is basically we paid to rent the digital content for however long they allow us access to our “purchases”? Once ps3 released, they blocked us from saving our content manually. Ps vita required a pc and software to backup content. That’s no longer working. But even then, you couldn’t actually see files of the content. On the psp I can view the contents files & names. I literally dropped PlayStation from my life for several years due to poor practices on their part when issues arose with my digital content. I use to be a Sony fan boy before I found out other products released by them have also been an issue. Sony is the brand name that has always screwed people over. Look at what they did to vaio users in 2014 and many products before this. Without the consumer, or customer, Sony would NOT be a household name now. They treat us like scum when it’s the other way around. They definitely don’t care about us. I’m sure Samsung don’t either, but I have reason to believe they have better morals. I gave my parents a new Samsung tv in 2012. 1 yr warranty was almost up when the main board took a crap. Mom called Samsung to see what can be done. They sent a service tech to the house from San Francisco, 45 min away (that’s during traffic hrs). It was also known that this was considered high priority, at least that’s what mom was told. The service tech was scheduled to arrive only a few days later, at my mom’s convenience. She chose the weekend. The tech basically installed a brand new motherboard and its working to this day. So even though I finally had to give in one more time & buy a ps4 pro a few yrs back just so I can play a few games that were originally supposed to release to ps3, I still have to throw up the California howdy sign to PlayStation. I wish KH3, FF7 remake & last guardian did release to ps3. I wouldn’t be here worrying about a thing. I’m currently deep in this rabbit hole as I just recently purchased a ps3 A01 model so it can be my 3 in 1 game console. Literally scrambling to get a PSP, PS Vita, and PS3 slim and fat in perfect order before anything happens. And if Playstation somehow screwed us over, can’t we just stay locked off our consoles to play our games? I noticed that there is an option to stay off-line as far as trophies go.

I will happen with the PS4 as well some day.

Luckily I don't have any digital PS3 games.

It sucks that game industry these days are not about game preservation, I mean look at movie & TV industry, they’re perfectly preserved especially with classic movies that were made before my grandparents were even born.

i have jailbroken ps3. i have never needed to login to my account on ps3(mostly only for trophies but that's all) and i have never bought any game in digital version. i have ps3 superslim with 500gb's so i have enough space for alot of games. If i want to play any game, i'll just download it on any site with ps3 games and when i want to update game to latest version, that's where Multiman is going to shine

this is currently happening as i type this. This is exactly why I am against buying digital copies of games.

I think they should have a class action lawsuit against them just for the fact that they USED their announcement to close the PS3 store to CAUSE a major buying spree. I was one of those people who dropped a couple hundred $$ after that announcement just to pick up all the PS1/2 games that I personally liked that aren't on the PS4's store. Unfortunately I didn't know about the CMOS issue when I did this and found out a month or so later but if Sony knew about this CMOS issue before their store announcement they should be held accountable and at the very least be legally FORCED to guarantee the removal of the timestamp check from the CMOS to play these titles if the store ever does get shut down. Also Sony's EULA/TOS should be illegal for being that anti consumer basically from what you read the user has no rights to these games but "WE" still have to pay for them to basically wipe their ass with our purchased game licenses at anytime they wish. There needs to be a limit to the type of horseshit a company to write in the EULA/TOS this is absolutely insane there's a shit ton of games that are digital only and you can't even acquire a physical copy for not to mention all the updates and DLC. Giving the option of "if you don't agree to the terms of this service then don't use it" is a joke and shouldn't fly in my honest opinion especially since ALL console/firmware updates and DLC are forced upon you to use this service anyway if you want to get the most out of your games.

The consumer can only take so much rear end action. When they shut down everquest they broke my brothers heart. Now I just bought a ps3 and downloaded content that wasn't easy to get. Blops 2 western map. So I could play online with him. And if sony takes this away from him I'm almost certain he will reconsider ever buying anything Sony.

So question: If Sony discontinued online services to the ps3 and you have a good cmos battery will you have acess to digital games? If so, then could you just replace your cmos battery every 10 years and be okay? I don't support what Sony is doing but I do have lots of digital ps3 games and would like to preserve them as best as I can legally.

That really is a shame I have all tons of survival horror, the first 3 RE, Silent Hill Siren Fatal Frame 1-2-3 Metal Gear 2-3 Hitman collection most of the Rockstar games I basically just leave it it my closet and figure ahh well if im ever really down on my luck and lose everything I'll at least be able to get myself in a dark corner somewhere and enjoy the classics!
