Although the game was buggy, and had some balancing issues i have an issue that everytime a developer oustside fromsoftware tries to make a souls game you seem to take issue with it, you had issues with demon souls and now this game, and some of your complaints about this game souls does all the time but you seem to give fromsoftware a pass, elden ring was not balanced and had plenty of times they throw tons of enemeis at you and gank you, i feel like you are extremely biased towards fromsoftware and give them passes on things that you get frustrated with in other games, and if your gonna review you should be less impartial, anyway i enjoy your videos but just noticed after watching your demon souls and fallen vids

Nah this game is pretty fucking cool man. Lots of people shitting on it, and it's got its problems, but similar to DS2--it doesn't deserve so much hate. This is a COOL game. I definitely disagree about the world, this is one of the best dark fantasy worlds I've seen and experienced. Combat is also very fun, with lots of mechanics and player agency, although it's not all perfectly polished. Bosses need a few more moves, they lack some complexity, but they're still pretty good outside of the gank fights. Speaking of ganks, that's probably the game's biggest issue. And it needs more enemy variety for such a huge world.

I like these kinds of build-based combat games and I enjoy trying different builds to get a completely different game experience with each one. Yet, the game has to work beyond its combat and LOTF does not have such an alluring lore as Elden Ring. I do not find myself trying to explore the world, it just seems like a meat grinder most of the time. I completely agree that the surroundings are just overwhelmingly gross and then when you get to Umbral, it just gets worse. I wish you could explore a more diverse set of terrains and worlds, like in Skyrim or Elden Ring. The narrow visual design also limits my role-playing experience as I can't really play a holy paladin, as even that character looks dark and creepy. I will wait for Dragon's Dogma 2, perhaps that is a better-balanced world that I actually want to explore.

I should've have listened to this review and NOT bought this game. I was pressured by friends for co-op. This is spot on. Interesting world and level design and systems with abysmal enemy placement, variety and numbers that make it the most annoying game I've ever finished. I love From soft games and Lies of P but this ain't it. In co-op it just makes it a beatdown fest, no strategy, no duels. Also the bosses are too easy. I beat the final 2 on my first try and was like WTF?! but I died often to them just having 5 "regular" enemies in a corridor. It doesnt make any sense. I got on my friends that have been playing for 2 months and encouraged me to buy it and we clearly don't agree. ANNOYING, UNENJOYABLE with cool world and magic and weapons.

I feel like one of the very few weirdos who disagrees, personally after beating it today it's easily become one of my favourite Souls-likes. I personally love the level design, exploration, interconnected world, combat, enemy types, Umbral, build variety, etc. While it absolutely has its faults like performance, being too easy and such, everything it does hits just right for me personally. It also helps that I'm also one of those weirdos who liked the OG LotF, and seeing a ton of lore, character stories and main events tie back to it in really meaningful ways honestly put a smile on my face and even got a few feels out of me at times. Felt like the game catered to me and what I want in a Souls-like almost every step of the way.

The bosses don't get any better. ALOT of people don't seem to notice or they're souls fanboys so they ignore that the bosses are really reskins of each other, that is why the bosses seem easy. I cannot stand the Souls fanboys mindset that its Souls like so it must be good no matter what, and if you don't like it you must be a hater or bad at the game hurrr git gud. This game makes the other Lords of the Fallen seem good

You are right, I watched some souls streamers talk highly about this game. I purchased the title, and its just felt wrong the entire way thru, You didnt get to mention this, but the mulitplayer aspect is horrible, very hard to get working, and takes alot of messing around with settings when it should just work,. thats for pointing out alot of the reasons I couldnt figure out why this game felt wrong, when so many streamers were praising it,... I guess money talks... I dunno, Still feels like an odd game, LOVED LIES OF P great title

Despite the hate this game got, I still prefer this game over lies of p bc of I just like collecting all the spells and armor. I also love trying new builds which this game offers a ton of.
Lies of P does have superior gameplay though. LoF has more "floaty" combat, at times it doesnt feel weighty idk how to explain. Also yeah the lock on system needs a patch.

Seems you have a particular taste. In regards to the speed of attacking, is Bloodborne too fast? Would it be better if it were slower? Lords of the Fallen isn't Dark Souls or Elden Ring, why should it copy and paste the attack speeds for weapon categories? You basically answer that concern right after too; there is higher enemy density and generally more ranged enemies. The devs want you to have the tools and movement speed to respond accordingly.

Ultimately, why even make this video? If you couldn't even be bothered to finish the game, why waste the viewers time by talking about it when you only played a very small fraction? Even considering the positives you included, it seems a disservice to both the viewers and the game developers.

Never played it, seems like Remnant without the guns, and Remnant might try to be souls-like, but the pacing and combat are much too different to be that comparable. Many points you make would make good parallels to what Remnant is, low commitment combat, always keeping pace, no fight very challenging or long, just kill the trash mobs, keep moving, kill a tougher mob for a few seconds, keep moving. I liked Remnant 1, have yet to finish Remnant 2, my coop group got busy

I 100% completely agree with you about the "low commitment" vs "high commitment" comments. To me, that is the biggest downfall of this game. The combat feels more generic hack and slash ARPG than Souls-like. Low commitment, loose/sloppy animations, little to no impact when making hits on enemies, etc.

I suppose for spells they could do something where you could put spell slots on a weapon itself, and then holding the button for that would bring up a separate control scheme. Like on playstation for example we could say L2 just because its a nice trigger button to hold as the "weapon", would bring up spells that you could have set to Triangle, Circle, Square and cross. Then you could hold those individual buttons in to charge cast them

Then you could just have your quick button like R1 for your bread and butter spell.

Im imagining it like putting 5 spell slots on the weapon, one as your R1 quick spell, then instead of hitting the direction pad a bunch of times all youd need to do would be hold L2+ Triangle/etc

Mass Effect radial menu of casting spells should replace the dark souls "scroll until you reach the spell you want" system. Time has to slow down but I'm ok with that, you can have lots of spells like Mass Effect. Darksiders also has a similar style of radial spell casting plus the hold L1 or L2 plus face button as a shortcut.

I don’t care about the Lord of the Fallen. In fact I’m tired of these high derivative games. Yet, this just sounds like a “it doesn’t feel like a FromSoftware therefore is bad” typical nonsense.
So tired of this community. Make it very close to FromSoftware: “copycat”, brings its on twist “the developers don’t understand what they are doing unlike my personal god Miyazaki”. Let these games be themselves for crying out loud.

Having not played Lords of the Fallen, my commentary here is purely academic and obviously has no basis in any understanding of the actual feel of the game, but I will say a faster swing speed and recovery on attacks may be intentional to make the game's combat feel somewhat more realistic to real world swordplay. I'm a huge fan of the Soulsborn games, and have beaten all 3 Dark Souls, including having played Dark Souls 3 up to NG+7, beat Bloodborn multiple times, and Elden Ring 4 times. I understand the appeal of the commitment system on attacks and I do love it as a system for learning and improving in the combat, but as someone who's also a huge fan of historical swordsmanship, it has little to no bearing on how actual fighting is done with swords.

From what I can see in your gameplay, Lords of the Fallen definitely isn't one to one representative of actual historical swordsmanship, but the way the character moves and stepping into their strikes IS fairly typical of actual swordsmanship. Typically in real swordsmanship, over commitment to a strike is a huge novice mistake, and even something like a greatsword does move a lot more like a katana does in Elden Ring. Does that necessarily mean that translating more realistic speed to combat into a game makes for a good combat system? No idea, as I said I haven't played the game, but that may be what they're going for just looking at the gameplay.

I think all of your points are objectively wrong besides not liking the visuals, which is subjective... And the fact you didn't enjoy the way this world looks is probably the strangest things I have heard all day. I literally walk through these levels in awe of how perfect the environments are.

I think the he makes a valid point, however, things look much better in recent updates, mobs are fewer, bosses seem harder, now does the game have problems, ofc it does, but it looks like the devs are committed to improving the game.

About the point about "low-commitment combat": Exaggerated attack animations and overcommitted swings that look like the character can barely hold onto his weapon bother me a lot in Elden Ring. I know it's a fantasy game, but if I'm using a greatsword, I want it to look and feel like a knight is swinging that sword, not someone who has no idea what he's doing. LotF is not perfect in this respect and the animations are definitely not what I would consider absolutely realistic, but it is a step in the right direction. Maybe this would prevent a game from actually being a souls game, but ridiculously long wind ups and cooldowns after swings make the combat feel sluggish, and I would prefer for combat in such games to be MUCH faster, especially with weapons that could conceivably exist in real life (this also applies to bosses, who suffer even more from hilariously long attack animations).
I am also of the opinion that this is purely preference-based. No combat style is the "right" one.

i dont like everything about this review but man it is nice to hear somebody shitting on this game like it deserves. i am utterly baffled by the positive reception it's gotten. i was so hyped and wanted so badly to enjoy it, but ultimately i STRUGGLED to get 10-15 hours in and then just couldnt do it anymore. this game is an incomprehensibly high improvement from the original lords of the fallen but it still sucks. a solid 4/10

And what makes the attack speed used in Elden Ring/Dark Souls the normal, while everything else is a mistake? Are you fucking kidding me? That's such a bullshit thing to complain about, if anything this is a positive, hell yes I like that I don't have to commit to 4 r1s and I can dodge out of it whenever I want. Why does punishing the player must be the standard, what's next, complaining that the hitboxes are too accurate and there is not linggering damage after you dodge to safety. Get the hell out of here with this review.

imo what bugs me about games like lords of the fallen is completely aesthetic. i dont know how to describe it and others like it other than "videogame incestuous", the product of videogames aping videogames aping videogames, almost devoid of its own pathos. inspiration is good, souls games are notorious for wearing their inspirations blatantly, but the inspirations are vast. there is history, religion, folktale, culture, astronomy, chemistry, architecture, alchemy, color theory, literature, manga, dnd, playing cards- and yes, other videogames of course. and maybe I am judging it too harshly, and lack the context for it.

but what does lords of the fallen offer, other than "here, I have made my own dark souls"?

I agree with the visuals being disgusting. I've never liked Fromsoft copycats but when I saw a trailer of this game I instantly knew it's not worth my money. Art design just looks so hideous and repulsive. It's like bad AI trying to generate Beksinski painting.
