The Rise and Fall of Gaia Online

I forgot it used to be called Gogaia! Man I went and checked my page from back in the day. So cringe.

We all grew up, im 29 now but I played this when I was 12. Don't even remember my login but it was fun, met a lot of fun people but they're gone now. Wish I could do it again

The halcyon days of Gaia were such a treat to experience. I really miss those days, especially all the friends I made online during those years. I've been on Gaia since the mid-2000s (I think I joined right around the last few days of Go Gaia, lost that account, and made a new account in 2007).

The first time I noticed a major change with Gaia was in late 2012. Friends I had began to abandon their accounts. To this day, I can scroll my friend list and still see that the last time they signed on was over a decade ago. The site still seemed active and I could always make more friends, but around 2019 I noticed a severe decline in the active user base. It's sad to see Gaia so empty these days.

Because of the lack of player base they actually started re-releasing old MCs and EIs, since all the originals are on accounts that havent been touched in over a decade.
But whats funny is alot of items either skyrocketed or deflated in prices.

What was the final nail in the coffin though was the death of Flash.
Theyre working on a work around but itll never be the same as the good old days.

There are a group of people that "meat" up in zOMG every friday though. Its called the "Dev Meat". Every week has a different avatar theme. We just sit and chat.

Considering the state of influx soc media is having right now with the Fediverse, do you see the same trend happening to No Code tools and Netflix clones based on React where a bunch of these sites especially the ones relying on PayPal to fall to the Play Store Google Play e-wallets and Apple and Crypto login payment systems or is there a space for a new un-Facebook un-4chan forum that harkens to Gaia Online's days but wouldn't make the mistake of banking on an unsecure trend like Flash. I mean Flash did last a long while including Adobe Air apps. Asking as a non-techie who loved sites like Gaia, Gamefaqs more than Wordpress, Facebook or 8chans. Ty.

Huh, I've been an anime fan weeaboo since 2006 and I've barely heard of Gaia. I must be more introverted than I thought.

Gaia was also moderately influenced by Ragnarok Online. IIRC the founders were RO players, and early iRO players adopted Gaia as a social hub. You can see lot of Gaia's early items taken straight from RO

I seriously do not understand what the new CEO at the time was thinking with all those bad decisions. If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear he set out to destroy Gaia Online. Even though it’s back in the hands of its creators, it still seems to face an uncertain future.

I just signed into mine. Omg but I'm sad because I think it got hacked. All my awesome outfits were gone. :(
