Norm Macdonald Is A Comic Genius

the genius in these jokes is that they are so simple, but drawing them out and really digging into the details strengthens the entire joke, making you think about several different things and taking you on a journey. when he delivers the moth joke punchline, it's so damn brilliant because the moth was personified to a great degree, but in the end he's still a simple little moth and can't ignore his instincts. it's beautiful.

the shallow grave joke is similar but he had to take us on the journey of all of the things a serial killer would have to think about in order to do that heinous act and to make us see through all those steps, and then get lazy and cut a corner on the last step is truly hilarious. I've heard these jokes many times and they still crack me up, when most comedians these days(even ones I am fans of) put out specials that don't even make me laugh out loud.

I also think you have forgot to relate the complexities of that joke. Moth were always used as depressed characters in literature(Death of a Moth By Dillard and Woolfe) Its him using that intertextual reference and completely subverting our thoughts that makes this one of the greatest jokes to ever be done.

What still blows my mind is that I worked in Toronto area comedy clubs back in the day and the grumble back then was that Norm was a "hack" and a "joke thief". It became painfully obvious over the years that this was just the grunts and grumbles of the jealous ones that couldn't break through. But that was the "consensus" for YEARS.

@Nerdwritter I am actually surprised you didn't include Mark Twain amongst his readings. He scoured every last piece of literature by him including back-and-forth letters. Especially because Twain was so humorous too, I've seen Norm use idioms classical of Twain to tell jokes. Idk but I really thought this video was fantastic. So sad we lost this man, yet so grateful we had the chance to experience his gift and give him the job through comedy intself.
