I'm not really impressed with the new GP-Log color profile. Are you?

What you dont understand ? Maybe there is reason behind to optimised for multipurpose usage. I don't understand your funny questions ''i don't understand''. My go pro 12 has open manual setting with LOG colors profile so maybe you don't know how to play with that

sounds like you should be using the gopro labs firmware. You can set the log profile and tune the noise to your liking.

from the footage log is so much better than the flat color emulation. About poor light performance? well the sensor is what it is and there is no software that can help sooo it needs to be used accordingly....I'm so frustrated with my gimbal at the moment that I'm seriously thinking of just using go pro for the very few tracking shots I do.

I wonder how gp log differs from flat colour previously, as a gopro developer said that the default flat profile on the 11 is in fact a log curve just a gentle one. So all the reviewers constantly saying 'it's a flatter colour profile but not a true log' were wrong.
It is interesting how turning on log on the 12 limits your settings so perhaps it is doing more than on the 11 doing flat colour and enabling wide colour gamut (in the labs firmware)

I have so many questions, like why is there more noise in gopro log. Like is the noise reduction just being turned down? (Like maybe the GP LOG actually just turns on nr01=1 on but without installing labs firmware) Or is something to do with the science of the GP LOG profile actually generating more noise while the noise reduction is the same as the flat profile.

I think people don't really understand LOG and how to use it. It is a professional technical profile not generally used by a consumer or even available on consumer cameras. It is intended for post processing to get professional results. There are reasons for capability limitations and that is why professionals would not use the camera beyond those capabilities.
Dark scenes are usually shot in a very well lit controlled environment and post processed accordingly. Which is why GoPro tell you it's not suited to dark environments.
Unless you are well acquainted with LOG and its necessary steps you will be disappointed. Don't expect record and play as recorded, you will get awful looking results; which is what GoPro is telling you. It's not a normal consumer profile; just use flat. Used properly it produces much better results.
Still photography can use 'raw'. Video photography does have 'raw' but it eats up storage at a fantastic rate; it's shooting multiple frames per second whereas a still photograph is just 1. LOG is a sort of compromise above raw for video.
'timecode' is also a professional feature not normally in consumer cameras.
Professionals like it because they can use it for difficult angle shots, or camera dangerous situations, and it would be a cheap throw-away camera (for them).
For me, the Hero 11/12 are both a 'professional' specification upgrade and not really a consumer rich upgrade; IMHO.

The log is completely unusable, stupid that they capt it at 400 iso, waaay too underexposed, losing too much information in the dark areas compared to standard mode... got the go pro 12 purily for Log & they completely scamed me

The GP-log profile automatically dials in an exposure compensation of -2EV. So, there are two ways to get around this, both of which require installing the GoPro Labs firmware. The first is to use Labs to set an EV of +2 (using the !MEVBS=2 QR Labs command) when using GP-Log. The second is to use the !MLOGB=400 command. This loads a log profile very similar to GP-Log, except that you have full control over the EV comp in the normal picture settings menu. I would also recommend setting the noise reduction to 50% or lower to get much better shadow detail, enable the wide colour gamut in all white balance settings using the WIDE command, and increasing the bitrate to 180Mbps.

This is one big reason why I still think the GoPro beats the Action 4, because no other camera offers this amount of control over the settings.

GoPro 11 has log and the exposure control works normally

Roma, try checking out GoPro Labs firmware for more control. Using the LOGB command combined with NR01 (reduced denoising) + BITR (for higher bitrate) you may land on an image you prefer out of the camera 👍

Really?!!! The GoPro 15 shutter speed only goes up to 1/400 in manual mode? My Action 4 goes as high as 1/8000 !! I find it hard to believe. I guess GoPro would argue that why would one want 1/8000 shutter speed when you can use ND filters. I don't own a GP 11 or GP 12. It would be good if some can do a comparison on the menus between the GP 12 and the Action 4.

Roma, agree with much of what you said. I own multiple GoPro’s and the GoPro12 GP-LOG profile is not impressing me so far. Took my FPV out yesterday and shot a bunch of footage ( as you did) and seeing exactly what you ate. Very hard to expose properly and in your footage can clearly see how noisy and blurry the log footage appears to be. Thought perhaps it was my color grade but think we’re in agreement that the log profile is not living up to the hype. Disappointed as well…thanks for sharing. 👍👍

I own the GoPro Hero 11 Black Mini. I bought it September 2022. I have watched a lot of videos between the Hero 11 and the Hero 12. I am sticking with the Hero 11 Mini. I might buy the DJI Osmo Action 4. I have been using the DJI Pocket 2 since it's release. It is my favorite camera.

The GP-Log is indeed really bad in low lighting conditions however i got better results in GP-Log with the native whitebalance auto gives really bad results and locking the wb to a fixed value does help but it still takes quality away in the log profil i got the best results with native wb and also gopro released a few days ago 2 luts for the gp-log profil it is a little hard to find but search in google after "gopro 10-Bit-Log-Encoding" you will find a gopro side with the download link to the luts. Turning down the max iso from 400 to 200 also helps

Great video, Roma. I’ve had a terrible time with GP LOG, my shots have been very blurry looking like the lens is out of focus and the GoPro transform LUTs to standard gamma rec.709 look terrible. Log modes are ideally suited to a full manual exposure, but as you know and pointed out, the Heroes have limited manual exposure control. The lack of shutter control is completely stupid. The HDR function has a very limited use. Both Log and HDR suffer with far too much noise, mostly in shadows but even in well exposed black and there’s a stupid amount of chroma noise in Log. I don’t know if you’ve found the same thing but while the 11 and 12 are essentially the same camera in standard. I’m noticing that the 12 is slightly noisier than the 11 in the shadows and overall. It’s not a massive difference but it is there. What’s really annoying about that is that these cameras should really be the same in standard, as the 12 is only a software and firmware updated 11. Anyway, great video and great examples. Cheers, Dave.
