Non guarderò mai più video con bookshop acqua alta, sento odore di muffa marcio e pipi di gatto. Nessun veneziano ci mette piede ,è folklore per turisti ignoranti

Most people like to visit Disneyland but wouldn't actually want to live there. Similarly, most Venetians no longer want to live in Venice because of how the city has become a caricature of itself, overrun with tourists. But there is a difference between Disneyland and Venice: Venice was actually a unique, and dominant, naval empire for several centuries, whereas Disneyland offers contemporary fantasy and child socialization constructed around a folk/fantasy scaffold. If you'd only ever been to the Venice offered by Las Vegas, you could be forgiven for not knowing the difference. Venice still hosts the Bienalle, the Regata, the Venice Marathon, the Film Festival, and now it has a soccer pitch.

Like Rome, it is a place where the weight of history gets into everything. Unlike Rome, sadly, it is no longer a particularly functional or real city; all economic activity is so wound up in nepotism and red tape that the past is almost forced to be the most interesting thing about it. So, you can see some number of those 100 churches, you can ride in that gondola, eat those foods, and take some tours, but this is a streamlined tourist experience that hundreds of millions of people have. People keep trying to find the "hidden" Venice when the city is so damned picked over that there are only really degrees of familiarity. For people who fall in love with the city (like me) what they're really trying to find isn't the hidden Venice but actually the fallen Venice. There is a dream that the culture, the customs, the energy, the commerce, the aesthetics, of Venice, will live again, that its citizens can do something other than simply fund restoration efforts with tourism revenue in an attempt to deliver a more polished and streamlined tourist experience. I don't think there's any shortcut to that, but once you feel it, it's the reason for all of this nonsense, and if you don't feel it, you'll probably feel like you paid too much for your cappucino at Caffe Florian, maybe you should go to Interlaken or the Seychelles or a Botswana safari, something that doesn't require you to resonate with ancient history to "get it." If you are a goth, however, you need to be in Venice (and check out Attilio Codognato's shop.)

My recommendations: Walk in Venice very late at night or very early in the morning, at dawn. The city looks and feels different at different times of day, and it is extremely magical at the emptier times. I like the Osteria Santa Marina as well as the Hosteria da Franz and Maurizio, the technician of seafood who operates it. La Fenice is indeed lots of fun. I also like the garden on the Riva for a great place to work out in the morning before you get going on a day of looking at fifty churches. There's a bartender named Marcello working in the Londra Palace hotel bar who makes, actually, the best drinks I have ever had. Any of them. Every version of a drink you order from him will be the best version of that drink you've ever had. He is kind of a handful, but geniuses usually are. If you have infinite amounts of money, stay at the Cipriani. La Zucca is a good place to get vegetarian/vegan food which is nice if you don't like walking ten miles per day in the heat while trying to digest 5 pounds of squid. But get a reservation.

I really recommend not drinking a lot in Venice, the lagoon is hot, you're going to be jet-lagged, walking miles and miles and getting lost a lot and bobbing around on boats, you'll definitely suffer if you have two spritzes with lunch then a cocktail and 2 glasses of wine at dinner. If you insist on doing this, I highly advise drinking electrolyte powder mixed with water immediately prior to bed. I am a borderline alcoholic and you need to trust me on this one.

Normally I'd say, when visiting a town "InteRaCt witH thE LoCalS" but because there are basically are none, you sort of have to interact with the architecture and the people in the service industry who are there to serve you. And as far as that goes, the worst thing you can possibly do is act like a prick or that you are entitled to special consideration because things are expensive. I advise being interesting yourself, being direct, being polite, and don't flinch at the costs. Do your research and make your budget in advance and check the reviews of places. Yes you can get ripped off if you just pop into random restaurants because you're hungry, but complaining won't do any good, the ship has sailed once you sit down, so don't.

ITALIANS ARE EXTREMELY RACIST, RUDE & UNFRIENDLY PEOPLE. DO NOT GO!!!!!
I am from the U.S. We went to Italy a week ago & had a terrible experience. At the airport, the lady who helps with boarding pass told me to try and fit my luggage into a luggage stand to measure even though there were other people who had larger and heavier luggages than mine and they weren’t checked. She did it just because of my skin color and that I looked different from everyone else. When we arrived in Rome at the Fiumicino Airport, it was extremely hot and humid and the roads were very filthy. We felt like we were in a desert. We asked for help to get a bus but Italians are very bad in English. They do not understand or speak it. Multiple people we asked did not respond and just pointed us to a direction. Anyways, we went to the Colosseum, and at the audio office we asked for an English audio and the lady said there’s no English audio. We did not buy into what she said because half of the tourists were Americans. We asked another lady and she gave us the English audio guides. We complained to her about the other lady being racist toward us and she apologized to us. Later we went to the beach and people were staring at us very rudely. We went to the Gelateria and the ice cream lady made us pay first and did not offer us cookie and whipped cream but she offered these to the locals and they paid later. On our way back, we took Trenitalia, and even though the tickets mentioned the train we were in was for second class tickets, she argued that we were in a first class train and charged us an extra € 28 with fine. We went to a bank to withdraw cash, and we needed help as we don’t speak Italian and we asked a gentlemen, he used his finger rudely and showed us a gesture not to bother him. At the Fiumicino airport on our return day, two ladies standing were sending all whites to the left side security check location, and all people of color to the other security checks where they are stricter with passengers. I went to the security check for white people and they were much more flexible. They let me take more liquid than normal and they did not measure my luggage on the scale this time. But after arrival, we were walking out the door and a French airport security guy stopped us in the midst of many other passengers to check our luggage. When he saw my American passport, he said no need to open luggage and let us go. This was the first time in my life I experienced so much hatred and racism from Italians. I have sworn that my foot will never step into Italy again. If you’re planning on going to Italy, it’s a total waste of time, money, and energy. I have been to Belgium, Netherlands, and Sweden, and my experience was much better. People there were much more helpful and polite.
