It's refreshing to see a British channel delve into historical defeats like the Drake-Norris expedition, often overshadowed by the Spanish Armada's fame. It's a testament to the channel's commitment to a balanced portrayal of history.

Like many of the comments have said, England wasn't a world power at this rate. It was starting to become one, but it had a smaller population compared to Spain, who was its height of power here.

Armada is a Spanish term and concept. England never was able to build something similar to an Armada

Queen Elizabeth I and her war council not on their best minds to launch this operation. Too ambitious for their resources. The biggest mistake was too attack A Coruña, losing precious time regarding the main objective, Lisbon and helping the pretender King Anthony (prior of Crato). The religious war in Europe did not help either in this context the expedition was impossible to get right.

This was not actually a worse defeat. The Drake-Norris expedition actually at least made landfall, captured several ports and towns and caused a lot of damage. Norris advanced through Portugal and surrounded it's capital Lisbon. In the end it was also fiasco for the Iberian union which failed to properly defend its coast line and territory. Compared to the Spanish armada which failed to land a single soldier; it cannot be said to be a worse catastrophe, even though in the end it was a fiasco for the English also.

In Peniche the defeat was caused because the Englsh didnt appeared as it was agreed. Even nowadays the expression "friends of Peniche" means "a false friend". I dont understand how the new British generations of historians still tolerate the old propagandistic historic tales, where the English defeats are never their own responsability. Afterall the best of history is to make us understand with our own mistakes!

Historically, the greatest contempt for the British fighting man was from his own side. The fight against the Armada reflects this. British sailors wounded in the battle were left to rot on the beaches, given no help with their wounds or food for their bellies.

Well the defeat of the Spanish Armada allowed England to continue to exist as Spain had the resources to accomplish this where England invading Spain was unlikely even before they set sail the most they could accomplish was a type of chevauchées

This English defeat can only be comparable to the one that took place in the battle of Cartagena de Indias, in present-day Colombia, with a number of English ships sunk and a higher death toll even when they tried to invade Spanish America. In that defeat that they previously sold as a victory with coins with the image of Vernon, it is shown how British history is full of fakes and propaganda. It must be assumed that the story and information related to this video comes from the book by historian and professor Luis Gorrochategui, under the title Counter Armada. Maybe it should be cited somewhere. May be also useful the BBC report on this matter, criticizing the official version of British historiography.

The amount of trees cut down to replace the senseless loss of ships could have reforested the Sahara and more. Today, none of the former Colonial Empires, who looted Asia, Africa and America for centuries, have anything to show for it.

This was just one of many Armadas that Great Britain sent in the direction of Spain or its American dominions. Some of them targeted the important ports in northern Spain; others set their objective in Cádiz; some headed towards America... and a few did not even go beyond the Cantabrian Sea because they were destroyed before approaching the Iberian Peninsula. It is not known what the objective of the latter was but we do not care too much about knowing. If I am not mistaken the total number of British Armadas rejected or defeated exceeded ten.

And for my dear compatriots, I can only say that all the education plans after 1975 have been truly rubbish, giving primacy to almost insignificant events carried out by the autonomous "tribes" instead of serving the country as a whole. This, the misunderstood Christian morality expanded by religious schools showing an untrue image of our history (we were always the most evil and cruel ones); the unfair prestige achieved by British historians supposedly specialized in the history of Spain but always from a point of view excessively inclined to leftist and socialist postulates... our damn complexes... and our lack of interest in serious reading to be able to compare different points of view, contemporary testimonies of events and letting ourselves be carried away by current political interests... apart from our proverbial indolence... have achieved the current disastrous state of our own national consciousness and the aberrant concept of our own history.

I suppose that the truth will prevail, even more so in the current times of information as long as it is not distorted, hidden or censored as happened until the recent past.

Despite the pride the British have in the British Empire, the British were remarkably unsuccessful in seizing Spanish territory. Just Jamaica in 1645, Gibraltar in 1704, & other small territories. British twice in 1806 & 1807 failed to take Rio de La Plata.

The defeat of the Spanish Armada might be the begining of England becoming a major Sea Power, but it really wasn't until the mid 1700s before you could really call England a dominant sea power. Before that time the Spanish, French, and especially the Dutch had gained naval victories over them. Heck, Admiral Byng was shot for his defeat by the French(though to be fair to him, the Admiralty was more at fault for the defeat. He did his best with what piss poor ships they gave him).

People & history decide the outcome of any battle or war . In this case even though geopolitically nothing changed much , people drew following points:
(1) Both Spanish Armada's invasion on England & English Counter-Armada's of invasion of Portugal had support from nearby nobility .
(2) Both Nobility joined in the battle & suffered losses .
(3) Both England & Spain suffered huge losses however
(a) England was able to invade into Portugal capturing 3 cities however could not hold them while Spain was unable to even land properly near England or it's neighbouring countries .
(b) England was able to get some loot from invasion while Spain suffered losses only .
(c) Spain had wasted huge resources & build it's fleet over years while England launched it over 1 year time period .
(4) Thus Europeans realised that England could overtake Spain if dedicated efforts , time period & resources were properly utilised by England . Over the next 3 centuries English Power overtook Spanish Power despite efforts by Spanish rulers . The English Parliament played a key support by granting opportunities, resources, required manpower & talent oriented appointments to ensure this success.

Excellent! It's the first time I watch a video on UTube and have to admit: I didn't know that. One point though: You're overstating the confessional aspects. Portuguese friars could well be pro-English, despite catholoc-protestant. Anti-Spanish sentiment cd be strong, as proven by the long alliance between Portugal and England - also, England wasn't totally Protestant. So, there is nothing terribly stupid in ttrying to talk friars into siding with a pretender, nor anything anti-intuitive them being anti-Spanish
