As for the whole 'Matt should of brought the axe with him' I can counter with two arguements against it.
A: Axe's are frickin heavy, like really heavy, he struggled to climb up with it and he assume he would be going back down to get it.
B: A more important point, if he did bring it up, no way would he have made it down to the mine death thing with it. It would of been thrown around when the tower was falling down, and even then he couldn't have carried it while trying to save Emily.

So yeah, no need to get stuck up about leaving the axe.
