Best Free Video Editing Software For PC & Mac (2023 Review!)

Thank you for this! I've been using Wondershare Filmora and I hate it. It crashes on start-up and won't update to the latest version. And it's way too complicated for this old gal. Either that or nothing works the way it's supposed to. So far CapCut is working well, but I do like having an equalizer.

Found Capcut was quite good, was alot like Wondershare, even so, the GUI was practically identical, despite the effects were not the same and quite standard, is completely free and no watermarks, ideal for my pre-recorded gaming content.

I work with Shotcut. I tried to use capcut too but the changeover is a bit big and i don't use so many stickers in my videos 😉 But CapCut use the whole GPU Power which ShotCut don't.. strange... Maybe I'll give it a nother try 😀

Primal Video.. I was using iMovie on my Mac mini but started using CapCut to check out the features. I like it but it only let me edit maybe 4 or 5 videos and the said I needed to update it. After the update it will not export my edited video to my computer. It say it can't find the save path or something like that. It also will not let me change the path. I think they did it to make me get their paid version. So I switched back to iMovie. I think iMovie is good but they need to add more features to it. I guess I will try DaVinci Resolve.

I am happy with Capcut, except that it does not have an audio equaliser, which is very handy when you shoot a video of someone giving a speech. I have to isolate the audio, equalise it in Audacity and then re-introduce it in Capcut. Very time consuming.

How about Openshot, did you hear about it? no, because the Openshot devs aren't your friends, and you already have chosen which video editor we should use, typical.

Capcut works flawlessly with gopro 5.3k files, davinci runs very very poorly even after tuning the settings. Capcut doesn't have any audio tools though...

Nothing is free. They have to steal your personal information in order for you to use it

I love DaVinci but I wish it had the effects like capcut and if I does I have no idea how to get them

How do you keep Capcut from lagging while editing? Both the PC and website version lag really bad once adding in b-roll and/or effects, text, etc...I love it, but the lag is very frustrating!! @primalvideo

Recently updated davinci resolve to 18.5 beta, and now when i try to play back footage while editing the video is lagging and audio is staticy, despite the unedited footage sounding and playing fine in windows media player. 😢

Da Vinci resolve is way too complex and hard to use, unless you're a semi pro that wants to spend hours on the learning curve. Furthermmore, there is a huge issue with Da vinci resolve that really few reviewers mention : it does not support Sony's camera video files format (.mts and .mt2s) ! Other free or quasi free editors support this format (such as Adobe premiere elements)

I hate Davinci so much, because doesnot support alot formats. I have to encode it every time and time is money... Davinci is over all good, but when I have more than 10 project and I have to encode em all... Comon....

Davinci Resolve. Period. 😉

VSDC is also a decent video editor but like DaVinci Resolve the interface still needs help. Things like stretching Video on the Timeline is difficult along with easy fade in and out transitions. My Favorite is Sony Vegas and it really has the best interface for controlling, cropping, scaling, panning and so many more features.. I wonder if these freeware developers are lost in their own tools and not watching what the others have been doing for decades... Its like GIMP when will it ever get even close to PS.. its literally been decades in development and you still can't do shit with it.. But in reality if you are just converting, cropping and posting videos you can often get away with something as simple as Avidemux which has zero overhead its just a tool everyone should have.

Thanks Justin, always great information. Bugger though, as I just purchased Wondershare Filmora 12, as a suggestion of a friend, as an easy beginners software. I missed that it might have had a free version ah dah But also noticed I am paying $34 a month for Effects & Plug-ins as well as the $130 purchase. Is that normal practice for these types of video editing software packages? I also checked out the DaVinci Resolve, but they wanted $10 a month to start a project? Love your thoughts on this.

How about an update for editing software for Chromebooks?

The VN editor does not have transcription or captions feature in the free version or at least I couldn’t find it. It has a track for subtitles but when tapped, it gives 3 options none of which do transcription. Strange!

I use VSDC and never looked back. Gone to pro version but the free version is still pretty good. PC only though, not Mac.

Might be nice to mention that capcut requires you to login to use it, and hoovers up user data worse than Google or Facebook do. As bad as Tiktok for this, and there's no way to use it without logging in. That's a deal killer for anyone concerned with internet privacy, not just people who 'don't like TikTok'.

CapCut doesnt have a watermark? Many people mention that a watermark appears for free version... and when they export the video they pick TickTok option to download the video or upload
