Hackers can do things the police can't, that's why they're better at it. Hackers don't need warrants and they make their lives knowing not computers, but the internet itself. Police have access to people who are very good with the hardware and software, but not the internet. Hackers are pretty much specialists- like when the police go to someone who knows a great deal about cars to have a specific car identified despite it being completely stripped of its more identifyable features (like the make and model logos, bike racks, wings, the black part on the front bumper some cars come with that's apparently called a bra). The difference is that hacker work is a legal grey area- as I mentioned, police need warrants for some of the information hackers can get, like if they manage to break into someone's locked phone or computer that they have refused the police to search.

I certainly hope that you are screening for those people that disappeared for their own safety or that of their children. Not every missing needs or wants to be found. I have known of groups that help people do that disappear for their own safety from violent partners or family.

I have a clear box of missing socks. Some people say to throw them away, but eventually, sometimes after decades, I find the sock. It represents a small amount of hope, that no matter where the missing item went, I have hope for its return. I try to apply this philosophy to the greater good, that you may be missing, but will be found, and not forgotten. It helps their spirit transition to the next phase of their existence too.

For people asking who'd do this for fun: I was once invited to a student theatre play, and I liked one of the actors, who was still a student and not in the industry yet. The next day I was bored, so decided to look into him. In a few hours, I found everything. His date of birth, his cat's name, his hobbies from when he was 11, what school he went to, what high school he went to, his exam grades etc etc.

My opinion about hackers has always been, "If only they would use their powers for good, instead of evil." Most hackers hurt people and ruin their lives. This gives me a ray of hope that that can be turned around.
