*** unedited owls in nature. Please only watch if you are comfortable seeing real life behavior ***
- The fireworks may be affecting the owls behavior.
Paulie Who had spent two nights of spending the day outside started staying in the box again.
- mom and Dad have slowed down the food Delivery somewhat. This may be to help encourage the Owlets to be more self-sufficient.
- We are starting on week 13. Around this time they instinctively leave to find their own home range. This is called dispersal. By 14 weeks almost all the owlets have left their parents’ home range.
- All of the owlets have Fledged (Flying), but they have not yet disbursed (found a new area to live). Owlets usually stay fairly close, within about 10-15 miles away, but in rare cases can go as far a 1000 miles. Some Owlets stay where they were hatched and may even use the house for themselves when they are ready to mate. Owls can have their first Brood as young as one year old.
- The last Owlet staying in the house was Paulie Who Left around 2am in the morning on 7/2/23. But started staying again, perhaps uncomfortable with the fireworks the last several days.
Birth Order & Coloring -
Charli, Female 4/4/23, dark Feathers and dark spots on Chest. Also dark Feathers on her legs. 2nd largest.
Finley, Male, 4/6/23, slightly darker Feathers around neck, white Feathers on Chest with some spots. Largest, broad & longest of the Owlets.
Paulie, Male, hatched 4/8/23, similar Coloring to Finley, smaller but a little more stout.
Min, Female, hatched 4/10/23. Similar Coloring to Charli but not quite as dark and coverage on Chest is a little less. Min is
the runt of the group - small and dark.
- it is unusual for the males to be larger than the females, however in this case they are.
- Mom Lucy was larger than dad. She was darker with more spots, but not nearly as dark, nor with as full coverage, as Charli.
- Dad Sid Was much whiter than the Owlets. He had no darkness around his neck. He did have some spots on the sides of his chest.

- Sometimes I have trouble telling the Owlets apart because we are seeing them mostly in black and white, and there is some over exposure with the camera. Also the sizes vary depending on where they stand on the perch.
- Over time the House camera has gotten dirty/occluded, so the clips are not clear. It will be cleaned after the Owlets have all disbursed.
- For now we are enjoying that Owlets are still here, and we feel lucky to watch the brooding season progress. We are also preparing ourselves for the time they move on.
