Possible to share your xstartup? Struggled with ubuntu desktop and getting vnc to work on true headless setup.

thank you so much. successful installation but ubuntu 20.04 Lts struggles because I have an SD of only 32 GB. Installation performed on a raspberry pi4 4gb with pi imager for raspberry. I will put it on an external hard drive or sdd i think.

All you need is Username: ubuntu
Password: ubuntu
Sudo apt get update
Sudo apt get upgrade
Sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
Sudo apt-get install xrdp

I tried to install 20.04 and Ubuntu MATE desktop environment, the usage is smooth enough; however the video playback via vlc or celluloid is not smooth, any idea to improve it?

none of this is helpful . all i have is wifi , i do not have either net to plug into , ive searcherd long and hard for the commands, for ubuntu 20.04, to get wifi in terminal, but it always fails ( im failing, in other words ) why on earth is there no image, that includes a desktop? do they just want us all to loose intrest? i cant even find an old image with a dektop, to get wifi connection and upgrade .....

Is it a huge difference with a 2Gb Board? 20.04 is unbearable for me. Literally takes 20 seconds after every mouse click. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong..

First during install. Of 20.04 ARM64bit I had to connect Ethernet.

Or you could not even login.

It doesn't find WiFi till the setup of the desktop.
Then I installed MATE. After that I had it where all of a sudden the screen would blank out.
But moving the mouse revealed parts of the screen. Or if you waited the screen would unblank.
I also tried getting rid of Powersaver and Screensaver as well as Composite Managers.

Hope they fix it.

Also GDM3 was taking 10-20 secs for the login screen to show up.
I tried Lightdm + GTKgreeter. It would not even get to login.
So I had to Purge Gdm3 and Lightdm.
Then install Slick Greeter. It installs just Lightdm all by itself. Then it booted and went to login in a few seconds.

Right now I have Ubuntu MATE 19.1 Armhf . 32 bit .
Using LightDM and Slick Greeter. Looks pretty much like Gdm3 but loads alot faster.

Because Vivaldi right now only has a 32bit browser. They are working on 64 bit one.

Also running Vivaldi web browser. With MP4A and AAC codecs.
It is on there site check for Widevine for the Raspberry Pi. There is a script at the end.
Make sure you use all three commands.
Do NOT use sudo with them.
Also you have to run Vivaldi browser first. It needs to do some setup or the script will result in a browser that will not start.

For everyone having the "no USB and no ethernet found no controlers found" problem during boot try below method

Well just sorted out..... the image I was downloading from the ubuntu site was at img.xz I don know why but I kept using 7-zip to make it a plain img file and then flash it to the sd card. This was failes using both Balena Etcher and Official Pi imager. As a last try left the xz file intact and loaded to the pi imager to flash it to my 64bit (dont forget to format it in fat32) sd card. AND..... voila..... everything worked out of the box.

PS I had Avira antivirus in Windows which keeps blocking flash programs from making cards bootable so I disable it prior in doing all the above.
