Here's a trick I use with bootstrap alerts so I don't have to close them myself.
Add the following to the alert div: data-timeout=5000, or a number you prefer to dismiss the alert.
In a javascript file, add the following code to set the timeout to close any open alert:

const alerts = document.querySelectorAll('.alert')
alerts.forEach(function (alert) {
new bootstrap.Alert(alert)

let alert_timeout = alert.getAttribute('data-timeout')
setTimeout(() => {
bootstrap.Alert.getInstance(alert).close()
}, +alert_timeout)
})

This works like a charm.
